Could someone remind me who makes those USB Keyboards (the musical sort - not qwerty) with assignable knobs and faders that everyone likes. Also, a website that sells them for reasonable prices. those are the midiman oxygen 8's. pretty cool devices, but be warned that the velocity functionality leaves a lot to be desired (varies widely, even from o8 to o8), and the overall construction is pretty cheap plastic-y and brakes easily :( On Fri, 2003-05-23 at 12:32, Aaron D Meyers wrote:

definitely check-out evolution products (http://www.evolution.co.uk/). probably the best price/features ratio you can find. doepfer products (http://www.doepfer.de) are cool too, however afaik they make no usb keyboards with integrated controllers. :g

Novation's Remote25 seems to be the cream of the crop... http://www.novationonline.co.uk/nov_route/docs/front/remote_front.htm http://www.8thstreet.com/product.asp?ProductCode=6348&Category=MIDI_Controllers has it for $399 but i think you'll be able to find for $349 once it's released. cheers w --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Agreed, the novation one does seem to be the cream of the crop but at $399 I think for a controller it is way too expensive. I just bought the Edirol PCR-30 instead (http://www.edirol.com/products/info/pcr30.html) - it has 32 velocity sensitive keys, 8 knobs, 8 faders and 9 assignable buttons, 1 preset memory and 15 user assignable memory locations and, like most powered by USB. Best of all it has a RRP of $179, so more than half what the novation costs. The ozone was my first choice until I saw the pcr-30. I liked it as it was nice and compact but it only has knobs, no sliders and as far as I could tell no presets. I have the Edirol PCR-30 usb controler, which blows away the Oxygen 8 in both contruction and functionality. -3 octaves -8 faders -8 knob -8 solo/mute buttons -mod/pitch bend There's more, but check it yourself. http://www.edirol.com/products/info/pcr30.html The PCR-30 runs $180, which is great considering all the extra features. The Oxygen series keyborads are built like shit. I don't know anyone that has gigged with theirs over a year without it falling apart. Edirol is a sister company to Roland, which has much more experience working with kerboard components. ^(|_|)^

I love my o8 and haven't had any problems with it and I don't think the construction is that cheap (it's not the best mind you). I just checked out the Edirol and I now want to upgrade. The price is just a bit more than what I paid for my o8 less than a year ago. Check out ZZounds (http://www.zzounds.com/item--EDIPCR30). I'm not sure how their service is but I always go there to check prices. I just check the price of the Oxygen 8 there and it's down to $140. For about $40 more you get what looks to be a better keyboard. The only nice thing about the o8 which is missing from the PCR-30 is the ability to run it off of batteries. I've never done this with mine and I can't really think of a situation where I don't either have power or access to USB. It might come in handy if you're using it with a module and the wall wart is covering up both plugs but other than that.... By the way, what software are you going to use it with. - c At 12:57 PM 5/23/03 -0700, Sean Horton wrote:

Two-octave keyboards fit into a rack. Mine also fits nicely on my desk, conveniently next to my keyboard and mouse.

I'm not sure who you're trying to speak for here, but I reckon the target audience for these 'boards are not doing eight-part voicings. To be sure, there is a healthy amount of electronic artists who seem to be trying to make use of their 8 years of piano lessons in a useful way (god bless 'em), but I'm under the impression that more people are just picking out notes and lines piecemeal, triggering samples, etc. Speaking personally, if the Akai MPC-like trigger pad had more assignable controls, I'd be there in a heartbeat. Maybe even for $399. -e --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
