Hi list, I am currently in Japan-- anybody know of any IDM (or other-- someone mentioned YMO before) that I should pick up while I am here? I am sure most things available here are available in the USA too, but maybe harder to find? Maybe some Japanese artists not signed internationally? Unfortunately, Japanese CDs are really expensive here-- close to the prices you see them for in the USA. Some titles are available in either the Japanese edition or a cheaper import! Thanks for any suggestions. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. I don't know any releases you should pick up but allow me wax on the greatness of The Ruins!! I don't think I have ever seen such a bizarre and exciting live audio experience as the Ruins put on! They are the coolest: find out if they are playing; how awesome would it be to see them in Japan?! end communication exclamation! dave -----Original Message----- From: Scott Gregory [mailto:amida@rocketmail.com] Sent: Thursday, January 09, 2003 12:58 AM To: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: [idm] Japan Hi list, I am currently in Japan-- anybody know of any IDM (or other-- someone mentioned YMO before) that I should pick up while I am here? If it were me, I would be scrounging for old Hosono projects, Daisyworld label stuffs and other assorted vintage J-pop (Denki, Sandii, etc), but if you're not familiar, I wouldn't advise anyone to rush out and drop that kind of $ blindly on anything (as you mention, it ain't cheap there!). You might want to try looking at copies of things you know and love as Japanese releases tend to have lots of exclusive tracks on them. Japan is VERY protectionist about what is released over there, which is why tracklists on CDs you'll find often have exclusive material. In order for something not to be an import, it has to have a certain percentage of content NOT released elsewhere. You might also find a lot of stuff as imports which is hard to find outside of Japan as well. While the 'net has made a lot more available to more places, there are certainly piles of things on shelves over there which you're not going to find on shelves over here - and when you can *sometimes* buy them from Japan via the mails, you're going to pay a stiff price to have them shipped. It is definitely worth some careful shopping. I still have things I bought on a trip in 1996 which I've never seen elsewhere, 'net or not. jeff At 02:57 AM 1/9/2003, Scott Gregory wrote:

If you're near Tokyo, this may be helpful (bounced from another list) : <snip> Shops to get standard new CDs- Tower Shibuya tends to have the most stuff of anywhere, there is a HMV nearby thats okay but in case they are sold out, they got rid of their special YMO & Friends section when they opened their new larger store though. Tower Shinjuku tends to be put down but they tend to be well stocked. HMV Shinjuku Times Square is worthwhile. Akihabara has some okay places but isn't user friendly. Isemaru Denki which has 3 different large stores with pretty much the same stuff laid out different wins over anything above in sheer quantity though its hard to find stuff. Theres a nice used shop a couple doors north of T-Zone (no CDs there), but its hard to find. The last big place there with a lot of CDs I think has a Y in the name and a lot of yellow plexiglass. Because new CD prices are fixed many shops offer some kind of free club card that you get stamped when you buy things, so if you intend to buy like 20,000, or 30,000 yen then you get like 1000 or 2000 store credit when you fill up the card at at any Tower if you have a Tower card (or HMV at HMV obviously) so it is kind of worthwhile to stick to one and only buy the out of stock one you can't find at the other. (Another stunt is the store taking the wrapper off new CDs to sell them maybe 300 yen underpriced but its hard to take advantage of this, its just takes place at more funky stores just on new releases) There are a lot of used places but Recofan Shibuya is the only pretty big one, there are more Recofans which are generally better than average, the problem is everything is spread out and the ones in the big record buying areas tend to get picked over in terms of finding used CDs. A hint is to try college student areas because of course none of this is really mainstream music. There is a Disk Union Techno Shop in Shibuya but its kind of spotty, its more a techno vinyl place. In general most hard core people want vinyl so its ironically perhaps much easier to find if its out of print. <snip> --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Track down the Japanese remix CD of same. AtomTM and I can't recall who else. jeff ps Sakamoto's new label "Progressive Form" might also yield some nice material - although you *can* get that stuff relatively cheap outside Japan. He's a fake. Besides *I* might wind up saying it and it's a drag trying to back from the 5th Dimension (especially since Billy Cobham is no longer playing with them). jeff --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Real Roxanne was lame and fake: a total construct of UTFO; UTFO were muscle-bound and boring. Roxanne Shante kicked ass and is for-real. And she did 'Sharp as a Knife'! Pretty decent Acid track, circa '88. The Bridge is Over.
