Yo, I found this guy (Mr Dunstan) on a Google search for my band's name, and was both chuffed to hear him play our record (on Dalriada) as the first tune, and also pleased by his comedy west country accent. I think that you are basically coming from the same angle that I did when entering the heady cave known (for better or for worse) as idm. I really liked Orbital (up to and including 'Insides'), Underworld, Chemical Brothers etc, but was looking for something a bit more fucked up and at the same time melodic and with substance. The first idm album I really fell for was 'Incunabula' by Autechre, and I still feel it's a stunning album, one which has aged very well. The Bauri material (like 'The Slacker Journal' on Neo Oujia) is also quite in that vein - not too terrifying for the new adept. This stuff is kinda glacial, if you know what i mean, emotively tuneful in a kind of bittersweet way. Nothing too crazy in the percussion tracks either. You may also like 'Fyuti' by Bola, on Skam, if these appeal to you. In terms of Machine Drum, who you also mentioned, you might want to check the Merck label, who he records with, or Prefuse 73 on Warp. Both do that skippy, scratchy hip hop - flip flop thing. Older Push Button Objects (eps on Schematic and Skam) fits the bill here too. Kettel veers to what I always am reminded of when I hear the term 'electronica'. People like Benge, Expanding records, Things on Benbecula like Mikael Romanenko or the 'Music vol 1 & 2' compilation. It's fairly self-conciously simple music - most of it usually contains one loop of ideas repeated over and over, with parts dropping in and out. There rarely seems to be a huge shift in any one song, but that can often be the most soothing aspect of this music. It seems to have taken a lot of influence from Boards of Canada, either of whose albums on Warp you should also try out as a first taste of idm. You like Recloose, maybe get some Carl Craig, but I'm not too clued up as to what's what with him. Recloose did a mix album, the name of which escapes me, and that would probably give you a good idea of artists and labels too watch for in that department. The other group of stuff that is considered idm is messy drill n' bass-type stuff: jungle through a blender, with hardcore/gabba craziness and usually a sense of fun. Examples: Recent Aphex twin a la Drukqs and Richard D. James, Most Squarepusher, Venetian Snares. I'm sure I've missed out vast ares of the pantheon, so maybe someone else would like to take on this Herculean task, the reference wallchart of idm. Ultimately, the best way to get into any scene is trial and error. The fact that there aren't any all-encompassing compilations that spring to mind doesn't help, but i suggest finding any record shop that lets you listen before you buy, looking for and listening to things you like/have heard good things about, and, by extension, looking for other things by these artists or labels connected to them. It worked for me. That aside I am into electronica but I am becoming unsatisfied with the more mainstream stuff like Underworld, Chem Brothers, Orbital, Jungle noise, Drum&Bass repeats... So I searched and I found this DJ, Dave Liteyear, who plays stuff on the internet @ www.totallyradio.com (ray gun classics is the name of his show) and I eventually found this IDM list. A lot of the songs he spins are by artists NOT mentioned on this list. However would he be considered an IDM dj because the songs are really *cough* "Intelligent" sounding. He spins: Bauri Dalriada Recloose Kettel Machine Drum etc. I don't have any IDM albums at least I don't think I do...Would "Children of the Bong" be IDM? But I like this stuff that Liteyear plays. All I am getting at is should I go out and buy this Aphex Twin guy and Autechre and BoC and whatever else. Just wondering if I would like it or not. steveE ------------------------------ _________________________________________________________________ Get a speedy connection with MSN Broadband.?
