Anyone thinking about buying anything online espescially when it comes to expensive things like laptop computers, etc should be extremely wary and cautious who you send money to, even through PayPal or other services. If a website does not give a lot of information or it seems like the deal you are getting seems too good to be true, it's best not to give out your money to them. If you're pretty sure they're ligitimate, you should do a background check on their domain name, PayPal reputation report or anything else you can think of. Also, if you're getting something shipped to you, make sure you get a tracking number for anything you buy. Although these precautions may not apply to all instances, please be wary when you buy online! I cannot stress this enough. I recently got ripped off for something very expensive by a fraudulent company, and I should've known better. I let my want for the item I was supposedly purchasing get in the way of logical thinking. I even emailed the company to ask why things were so cheap and they answered and seemed legit in some way. I knew in the back of my mind that they didn't seem trustworthy. I thought I had checked everything I needed to, but really the fact that I needed to do this was reason enough NOT to trust the company I was ordering from. The crazy thing is, the link to the site came from THIS very list saying how great the site was and how cheap things were. I would've been making music with my new item, but now I'm just more in debt and it's not easy to track down people unless you're ready to fly to the city and look for them personally with a gun, which I would if I had more money! Don't think you're too intelligent to get trapped in this kind of thing either. These people know how to do just enough so that you trust them and then they get your money and only put in minimal effort. It doesn't take much and they have a new Porche suddenly with your money. Anyway, I hope my long cautionary post is enough to stop other people who are just honest music makers and artists from making the same mistake I did. BE CAREFUL PEOPLE!! --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

If you're doing this, especially from someone you don't know or don't have any reason to trust, you should probably use an escrow service. I've seen it recommended for any purchase >$100 though that may be extreme. Even sellers with high reputations on ebay have been known to one day take all the money and cash out. I don't know what escrow services are supposed to be good these days, though. -kyle -- http://mas.cs.umass.edu/~rawlins -- white deep blue andalusia red yellow red yellow black car

Be aware that this website ( http://www.lapstop.net ) looks similar to the one that ripped me off when I ordered some gear. They are probably littered all over the net. The style of the design is similar. They make it look like they're just starting out their new company selling highend stuff for cheap "overstock" prices, and they always include FREE shipping. Beware of that scam. FREE shipping usually means the low end shipping which includes NO tracking number and thus you're in the dark as to whether it's shipped at all or not. These sites by the same group of scam/fraud artists make a living lying and stealing by first getting your trust and your money second while also making you think you're getting an incredible deal. Take note people: Unless someone hands you a laptop computer and says "Hi, want to buy this, but first test it out first and see if it works well, and then if you like I'll sell it to you for half the price of anywhere else." be very careful where you buy from. I should've listened to my gut before making that online purchase. It told me that it "just felt wrong". Trust your intuition people. Hope this helps. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
