i cant speak for ninja or warp or any other independent label, but here's what's about to happen with the majors At the beginning of May, news.com providing technology news featured a Reuters story (http://news.com.com/2100-1023-896391.html) revealing that "Universal Music is in talks with its best-selling rap artist Eminem to incorporate copy-protection technology into all upcoming CD releases of "The Eminem Show," marking the biggest move yet to protect its top acts from music piracy." Universal and Eminem would need to strike an agreement on whether to release the security-enhanced CDs in the next two weeks to meet manufacturing deadlines for the June 3 release date outside the United States, a Universal representative said. If approved, it would be the most significant new music release to come embedded with copy-proof technology, a new innovation adopted by the major labels to thwart the rampant rise of consumer piracy, which they claim is hurting CD sales. In a related move, Universal is also closely monitoring the circulation of Eminem's first single "Without Me," the company said. The number of promotional copies, ordinarily delivered to radio stations and the media, has been limited to ensure it doesn't fall into the wrong hands. if you follow the related story, you'll see that Sony Music in Germany & Japan have instituted it along with a few of the other majors who seem to be limited and copy protecting advance promos that are being given out to radio stations and journalists. Oh shit. Is this going to affect the high-quality mp3 copy of the album I just downloaded from usenet nearly a month before its actual release date? At 08:19 PM 5/12/2002 +0100, nethed wrote:

IMHO this only applies to the CDs distributed (and manufactured) by Zomba which are the CDs you're getting outside of the U.K. but in the rest of Europe (dunno about the U.S. releases)

I never had such a disc; that's also the reason I bought Drukqs off WARPMart - the CDs found in the local stores around here all said "Will not work on a PC/Mac" in some illegible small type on the back. (Funny enough, the copy of APC's "Arryhthmia" I bought here doesn't have any of that playback-protection crap on it, even though it's distributed by Zomba...) Also, I wouldn't really worry about the AE DVD, as none of that audio CD copy-protection crap applies to DVDs; many DVD players even choke on such audio CDs, and DVDs got their own "copy-protection" scheme called CSS, even though it's been horribly broken from the start and can routinely be bypassed on almost every PC you'll find... -- Kurt Bernhard Pruenner --- Haendelstrasse 17 --- 4020 Linz --- Austria .......It might be written "Mindfuck", but it's spelt "L-A-I-N"....... np: Kid606 - Whereweleftoff - Things Changed (Vertical Forms comp.) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Are you sure about this? The Warp releases I've bought outside of the UK but in the rest of Europe all play fine on my various PCs. Has anybody else in Europe ever got a copy protected CD Warp release? -skkatter __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! no no no. Everyone is just getting autechre and celine dion mixed up. Don't worry I do it all the time. For the record: She's the one with the "no computer play" mod on her most recent album, and from what I understand - only with the German release. I don't really see the point of this as it's not all that difficult to re-record something digitally. If the warp crew were really concerned about their stuff being pirated they'd put out a hit on whoever runs soulseek.. ~g -- Greg Smith http://www.laiad.com "There is no such thing as a perfectly accurate clock. My copy of "Boards of Canada - geogaddi" is not copy-protected - thank god, MP3's are so much easier to make playlists with. The page of the digital rights thingie also mentioned copy-protection for "Zero 7 - simple things", but my copy is not protected. I bought both CD's in Belgium. --Jan! --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

The German release of Aphex Twin's DrukQs was copy-protected. Does anyone know if there's any cooperation from the CD/CD-RW manufactuers on this trend? Kinda silly, really, since it only hinders the 'casual pirate' (aka the average joe) from making MP3s of a CD...the real problem-causers in the industry (the pirates in it for the cash in countries with lax copyright laws) still can bootleg a recording, they just have to feed it off a CD player with a Optical Digital out to a PC or Mac with OD inputs on the soundcard. And why is it only (seemingly) German releases? Is Germany the piracy capital of Europe? I think not. I haven't found any computer (PC or Mac) that will read Drukqs, but it will digitally transfer using a stand-alone unit (hhb). Same goes for my copy of the 10+3 Remixes.

i mean, come on, are you people that worried about making mp3's? the last time i checked, all macs and pcs have an 1/8 input in the back of the puter, get a shitty cd walkman get a 1/8 inch to 1/8 inch "male" chord and go ape shit, there are plenty of computer recorders out there, press play on the cd player and record in yer puter, anything that makes noise can be recorded, and to all the music people out there, dont bother wasting your time, its stupid to even waste a second on trying to protect your music, its your loss when you press 10,000 cds and have 1/2 still in stock, try a limited press and accept your shit is gonna be bootlegged, for the record, a cd is only bought in my part when its not available on vinyl, sorry, but i think, music, meant for the masses gets what it deserves, take care people, r --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Nope. I'm worried about not being able to play the damn CDs in my DVD and CD-R/W drives because that's the only thing left to play them on after my stereo's CD changer started eating CDs for breakfast... I mean, is it really wanting to much for them to come up with a "copy-protection" instead of a "playback-prevention" scheme? Or better yet, how about forgetting about it and using the money pumped into such idiotic schemes somewhere else, as there never ever was one such scheme that wasn't broken/circumvented/what have you... it's as if the whole music/entertainment industry went nuts... *shakes head* -- Kurt Bernhard Pruenner --- Haendelstrasse 17 --- 4020 Linz --- Austria .......It might be written "Mindfuck", but it's spelt "L-A-I-N"....... np: My noisy DVD drive, ripping a DVD to my hard disc so I can play it _without_ the constant noise of a 16x DVD drive that can't go any slower... at least it's fast when ripping the discs contents... --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
