I was thinking of getting microcontact, but I'm kind of unsure - I loved the cosmic forces of mu track he did, but after that I picked up that 7" he did for the label and it's nothing special. How does the album compare to the other two releases? Also on planet mu stuff, would it be worth picking up the rereleased Capitol K album? I bought it the first time round and wasn't impressed, but I loved 'sounds of the empire'. Worth paying for twice? Dan.

I think the 7" is good, especially side A.

I think the 7" might be more representative of what "Microcontact" sounds like. The "Cosmic Forces Of Mu" track is I think the most melodic and idm-like track I've heard from him. The sounds are representative of what he usually does, but not the melodic aspect. He does different sorts of things and they tend to be pretty abstract and non-stylistic so it's hard to say "this sounds like him and this doesn't". His Electric Company remix on Tigerbeat6 was by far the best track on that disc imo, and I think is more representative of what you'll find on "Microcontact" than either of the 2 things you've heard. Imo, Leafcutter John is not IDM, despite the fact that his records are on Planet-Mu. What he does is a lot closer to "electroacoustic" music.
