Has anyone here listened to the new Hood CD? I think its the best attempt at combining electronics and indy rock. It reminds me of the best elements of Vespertine, Kid A, Mogwai and Slowdive's Pygmalion. Radiohead should pay attention! _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Finally got a copy of 'Duck-Rabbit.' Fantastic design, I just love Rune Grammafone. I want them to redesign my... my... everything. I've almost ordered other artists from them based on their packaging alone, anyone care to pass on any pointers or reviews? On first blush D-R sounds more focused, almost more Boards of Canada, then Alog's first (Red Shift Swing) -- I even hear elements that echo drum & bass. But this step towards more general accessibility doesn't hide their gleeful use of mutated and mutilated source... so tasty! Please, someone point me towards something similar... (free association comes up with Curd Duca's Elevator 3 and maybe Philip Jeck, but I already know those...)! aaron ghede@well.com http://www.quietamerican.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Because techno is the grandaddy of all modern electronic music genres. Before anyone was listening to house, jungle, breakbeat, trance, IDM, etc. they were listening to Techno. Everything after that is just a sub-genre. Techno is actually a very logical place to put IDM. 12 years ago if someone asked me what kinda music I listened to I'd say "techno". So, as far as I'm concerned everything that came after is just an interpretation of the genre. Techno is the master genre. It defines the category of electric music we listen to. Most people who listen to a lot of electronic music agree that "techno" is its own subgenre of electronic music alongside house, trance, dnb, idm, etc. A notable example of techno is Plastikman/Richie Hawtin. That said, we all know that most of the mainstream public refer to all forms of electronic music as "techno", which is certainly what mp3.com did. But, you know, some people hate that shit. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Well, if you're gonna get all historical about it, techno is not (chronologically) the grandaddy of all modern electronic music genres. House has been around in one form or another since the fall of disco, and unless you count kraftwerk as being the techno genre unto themselves, it predates what most would consider techno. So IDM should be listed under house now? :)

Also, a lot of things that I would call IDM today, I called "Intelligent Techno" a few years back. I guess the question is this, if you were MP3.com, where would you put IDM? LOL, that's why I inserted "modern" because I was really referring to Techno music as I know it; modern US/UK techno born in the late 80's to early 90's ala much of what Thorsten Sideb0ard wrote in his email. I wasn't trying to get historical really, just trying more or less to say what Thor said ;-) I guess if I was trying to get historical I'd say that when I first started listening to "Techno" I was going to "underground's" and it wasn't until about 3 or 4 years later that techno became jungle, house and trance and the scene became "rave". Oh those were the days.... And yeah, the mention "category of electric music" was a typo. Shoulda said electronic Anyhow, that's all for me... Without getting into the whole genre naming arguement - stuff is listed under "techno" because despite the fact that to people who know it represents a certain specific, and limited sound different from jungle, house, trance, electro.... Its become a generic name/category for anything electronic with a beat, at least for everyman. Its uninformed and possibly backwards, but its definitely the case, reguarless of the history of anything. If i was on MP3.com honestly i'd try not to use "IDM" because its also a very misleading label. - cutups ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Hoover" <djintraveinous@mchsi.com> To: "'Helix Tradesman'" <paelon@hotmail.com>; <idm-list@staticbeats.com> Cc: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Tuesday, March 19, 2002 5:54 PM Subject: RE: [idm] wtf...
