So here's my question. If these MASK records are always bouncing around from the hands of buyers and sellers on Ebay how do they always remain in mint condition? Has no one ever played their copies of these records? Does no one ever touch them or place them on a turntable? Does a needle never touch the record? If a $350 reserve is a $350 reserve then shouldn't Mint be *MINT*? This question should not be mistaken as directed to the original poster. It's a general question regarding the oft ebay'd MASK series and "mint" vinyl auctions. Well, good question though. If I had payed $350 for a record, I can tell you that no needle would touch it in my house for sure. ; ) I imagine that the majority of these records for $250-$350+ probably aren't played. -somrux. http://www.somrux.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "Static Beats" <idm-list@staticbeats.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Thursday, November 08, 2001 1:51 PM Subject: Re: [idm] Mask 100 FA - Mint?

Back in the day (er, 2 years ago), I bought Mask 400 for 100+. I played it once to copy it, and when I auctioned it back off (when I needed money :), I said very clearly that I had bought it at auction, I had played it once myself, and I didn't know what its history was but I thought it was in fine condition. I think that's a responsible way to go about it. -Adam --- somrux <bishop@somrux.com> wrote:

i bought once an 'AFX - Hangable Auto Bulb 1 EP' for 50 bucks from Dean-O-Matic. you can trust him, he's a fair guy absolutely. oh well, and the vinyl was mint, as it was still sealed! (btw it IS still sealed, and probably won't be opened any time, i have the EP in mp3, but i had to have a sealed copy in my hands...erm what? a die-hard collector? :))) i don't think so, just a bit of memorabilia of a time i had no chance to live in...coz i discovered aphex in early 1997.) A QUESTION: does anybody have this HAB1 ep in excellent quality mp3 format? what i have is from the late bleepbloop site and that is unfortunately 128kbps and low quality... :( bias. 08-21 [70] 234-7610 d3 pel f!ueqn>!q << fsafuo> x!waJ apoW ay>adap || >qf 21-08+SZ/V 312-9798 >|ax!waJ o6Ja>|af << wafshs punos ew!ue || d3 peolf!ys se!q --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

A lot of this is a re-interpretation of the word "mint." It's supposed to mean "untouched by air, human hands, etc.," but it now means "no physical imperfections, etc." And it's pretty easy to keep a record looking mint if you take good care of it. Generally, when it comes to records, the distinction between the above two is "sealed" vs. "mint." A record can be played and stay mint, to most people, whereas a sealed copy will automatically get a much higher price. A mint copy of HAB2 can fetch upwards of $90US, whereas a sealed copy will easily get over $120US. It also goes without saying that any item's condition on eBay is a little worse than advertised. The things I've sold I've tried my best to explain their actual condition, and I get compliments from buyers who say that the condition was much better than expected. So, it seems that most people understand that the sellers are usually fibbing a little. Especially on items that need to be used in order to be enjoyed. derek --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

i get exactly what you mean, but the difficulty is that he hardly can be proved. i mean when mint is mint? all the masks things were pressed in the czech republic and they are pretty known for not the most nicest sleeves etc. for me i did bought them at the time they came out, but how can i prove? :) i can put on 'first owner' and stuff like that as well but again . and to be honest i didn't play them that much, etc. to be honest i'm not a that experienced ebay user, these are the first things i'm selling, as i quit my job and want to buy some new music equipment. i didn't put that mint thing on with mask200 & mask400, but had a look at other auctions.. :) ah anyway

Well I don't know if I'm getting philosophical about this but in theory I can play a record a hundred times over and have it still be visibly "mint" - so long as the needle is placed at the beginning of the record and allowed to play until the end each time (effectively eliminating nicks and scratches from moving the needle). This however will degrade the quality overall. I suppose the correct reference to "mint" would be to add - "only played once" or "never played ever". Now that is MINT :) When it comes to using the term mint with regards to vinyl it's difficult to substitute the word "sealed" since many records do not arrive with any sort of seal. Just a sleeve. In addition, a record could look great visibly but be of poorer audio quality because it's been overplayed even if it was handled delicately. And to reply to Adam's post I'll say - indeed, this is my point exactly. Including a bit more info in your auction description helps the buying public no what they are paying for - especially with such a rare and high-priced item. To reply to cuisine 707 I say see above for Adam's method. Although saying "first owner" and the like may or may not be honest this is the nature of auctions - essential the buyer is trusting the seller (and ratings are supposed to help this). When selling such a rare item however any additional information you can provide is always helpful.
