Context Free Media Newsletter, Part II : THE SEQUEL _________________________________________ Wow... it's hard to believe that over two months have passed since I sent out the first Context newsletter. Time sure flies when you're a pigeon! And now, without further a-doo... ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Context Release News ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Context 07, produced by Portable, will be released at the end of July. The "Patterns and Signals" EP is Alan Abrahams' first release since his relocation from Cape Town to London in 1997. Portable has recently begun a residency at Acapulco, a monthly event at London's Plastic People. Upcoming guests include Safety Scissors (August 1) and Sutekh (September 12). Test pressings (all 5 of them) are out for Context 08, produced by Vancouver's diamond in the rough, Ben Nevile. The release date is set for the beginning of September. Look out for additional releases by Ben later this year on Mosaic (UK) and Telegraph (Logistic sub-label from France). Just confirmed: Context 09 will be yet another debut, this time from Tijuana-based Fernando Corona AKA Murcof. Murcof fuses orchestral music with techno in a truly seamless and unique fashion - the results are emotional, ethereal, and funky at the same time. We are very excited to present Murcof's first vinyl release in October. Context 10 will be a 2LP compilation and mix CD (mixed by yours truly) with highlights from the back-catalogue as well as exclusive new tracks and remixes. More details will follow (as soon as I figure them out...). ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Related Release News ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Pigeon Funk [AKA Sutekh & Kit Clayton] was released last month and received overwhelming critical acclaim, including feature reviews in Time, USA Today and Low Rider, and a 7-page fashion spread in the French edition of Vogue. A follow up release and world stadium tour are planned for 2002. For more info- http://www.proptronix.com and http://www.pigeonfunk.com. Look out for Proptronix 02 : the E.P. E.P. compilation (Electric Pants E.P.) coming soon. Sutekh has completed a 12-inch for a new label based in Las Palmas (Canary Islands) called Klitekture. The EP is entitled "Deposited Trails" and is set for release in September. Sutekh, Safety Scissors, and Twerk are currently working on a collaborative 12-inch project for Swayzak's label, whereby Swayzak provide the sounds and the rest of us make things out of them. Sutekh and Safety Scissors will be remixing tracks from the new album by Chessie, entitled "Overnight". The album will be released September 4 on Plug Research, and the remix EP will follow later in the fall on Hrvatski's RKK label. Aside from playing his recently acquired collection of electric pianos and developing video objects for Cycling '74's Max/MSP software, Kit Clayton has been busy working on production behind-the-scenes for the much-anticipated debut of SF's infamous MC Gold Chains. Prepare to be floored - this one packs a wallop! Also look out for Kit's remixes of Pole on the next ~scape release entitled "R" which includes remixes by Burnt Friedman and Pole himself. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Upcoming Shows :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Sutekh live: August 4: Akabal - Ogden, Utah [LIVE + DJ] August 11: Transmissions Festival - Chicago - http://www.transmit.org August 18: Klitekture record release party - Las Palmas, Canary Islands August 25: ARTheatre - Köln August 31: Centre for Contemporary Art - Warsaw September 1: OstGut - Berlin September 5: Rendez Vous Electroniques - Paris [LIVE + DJ] September 8: BetaLounge, Hamburg - (tentative) September 12: Acapulco @ Plastic People - London September 13: Mokka - Thun (Switzerland) [DJ ONLY] September 14: Fribourg (Switzerland) September 21: Boby Centrum - Brno (Czech Republic) September 22: Zürich September 29: Soundscapes - Belgrade Safety Scissors: August 01 - Acapulco, Plastic People, London [LIVE + DJ] August 10- Mental Industries, Panorama Bar, Berlin [DJ] August 18- WMF @ Popkomm, ARTheater, Köln [LIVE] August 25- Copenhagen [LIVE + DJ] August 31- Panorama Bar/OstGut, Berlin [LIVE] September 06- Rendez Vous Electroniques, Paris [LIVE + DJ] September 14- Brussels [LIVE] September 22- Birchstrasse, Zürich [LIVE + DJ] September 28- Columbus [DJ] September 29- Shift, Cleaveland [DJ] Twerk live: August 17-20: Fusion Festival - SF/Bay area - http://www.fusionfestival.com August 31st - Panorama Bar/OstGut, Berlin (with Safety Scissors) Twerk live in Japan - Tokyo's Liquid Room and in Osaka - September 20-25th Kit Clayton (last live appearance of the year!): August 11: Transmissions Festival, Chicago - http://www.transmit.org (with Sutekh, Monolake, Vladislav Delay, etc.) ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Bits and Bobs ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: A few things currently on rotation around the house: Antibalas - Liberation Afrobeat Vol. 1 (Ninja Tune) Wobbly - Regards (Principio/Alku) Prince Buster - Wreck a Pum Pum (Prince Buster/Jet Star) Common - One Day It'll All Make Sense (Relativity) Tarantel - From Bone to Satellite (Temporary Residence) Wheel watch: Sutekh's rear bicycle wheel was stolen outside of a recent Gold Chains show. He has since replaced the wheel and painted the bike "chalkboard" green. Style watch: In an attempt to emulate Sigue Sigue Sputnik's lead singer, Safety Scissors has dyed his hair black and shaved the sides of his head. Twerk has cut down the shag and added a twinge of orange to the mix. Kit has acquired some bigger, even nerdier glasses, while Sutekh has purchased a year supply of disposable contact lenses and for the first time in over 25 years has begun to grow out his hair. What final shape it will take is still a mystery... ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: That's all for now. See you next time! -Seth --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
