Hey All --
Here is the e-flyer & my PlayList for the ULTIMATUM 5 event in Philly July
6. It was a brilliant night with fine sounds all around. I played in a big
walled in courtyard in the middle of an urban area...there was a
bonfire...and a fire-eater (who incidently got so caught up in things he
set his face afire) I thought my set went really well, although I did note
a few people leaving as I experimented with several tracks of ululations
(not listed on PL)
oh well
some things are just too out there for SOME
people
haa haa! Hrvatski was himself :-) Yes yes.. mad props to the
215noise crew!!!!!!!!!!! I have also included 2 reviews of some
interesting stuff by Kim Koschka.

KIM KOSCHKA - BELLA MANIERA - PSYCHOTROPIC RECORDS === Kim Koschka, born in
Japan, first became known as a synclavier programmer and arranger in the
late 80s. In 1986 he set up the DMS studio, where he collaborated with
numerous artists, notably Haruomi Hosono, the techno master and founder of
the Yellow Magic Orchestra. Nice packaging on this CD - luminous green
case, cool artwork, interesting photo
There was a lot about this disc that
made me want to listen to it at the first opportune time that I could
really savor it, cause from the press sheet and presentation, I was very
intrigued
7 tracks here of a very complicated sounding music making
process, by way of reading the liner notes, where-as this musician, Kim
Koschka, does it all: piano, harpsichord, vocal, mellotron, organ,
mini-moog, synclavier, synthesizers, samplers, virtual orchestra, virtual
percussion, and all other virtual instruments. Its on the experimental edge
of Drum & Bass, most of it based on Classical themes and processed. Ok,
here goes the rundown->
ALLEGRO VIVACE(7:59) Wild, deep running D&B with horn blats of all kinds
and crazy piano riffs, ghostly string pluckings and other frightening
sounds! It breaks down with a harpsichord and wood sawing - back n forth
to the beats n stuff - now adding vocoders & a thick black cloud of evil.
D&B for grand orchestra! ****
GARCIA LORCA (6:20) Beaty, slightly exotic industrial like
slight tribal
feel with a primal ooze! Theres voices here and there, and um, a good
message? **
IMPROMPTU FOR A FRIEND IN CHINA (9:42) Live crowd noises, sounds Asian
with chill jazzy edgy beats and a great guitar. Lots of exotic teasings
reminicent of a familiar feeling
nice, chill
does progress and digress
nicely, picks up energy! Ends beautifully. ***
NAIROBI 2061 (6:56) is a great track I find myself using a lot
Bongoes
lead into - church organs?!? Woah, weird! (but it works) Theres lots of
spacey stuff, then, tribally D&B, real crazy shit! Airplanes flying
overhead, crazy wild dancing & drumming & chanting & insane violins &
D&B
.whew
ends with really nice atmospherics. ****
FIBONACCI DUB (12:51) D&B!!! Shattered elements throughout make for a
very interesting track! Deep flowing And mysterious! Ooh, neat eerie
chanting
chill, long epic piece. ****
THE TERMINAL BEACH permutazione for chamber ensemble (10:41) A guy speaks
the title to open - then a deconstructed airy chopped & mixed up work that
slides easily from friendly to frantic to flipped out
chill deep and low -
the guy talks here and there. **1/2
HOMAGE A MORTON F. ambiento con una frase for chamber orchestra (10:16)
Low, chill, sparse
gets a bit jazzy. **
Conclusion: Very interesting CD - great use of the piana as an art.
DEMOLITIOM SQUAD - HIT IT - PSYCHOTROPIC RECORDS === 8 tracks of a
collaboration between Kim Koschka & Jim Goetsch. As much as I liked the
solo effort of Kim K., I really dont care for this co-lab too much. Track
1 is ok, Looking Out For Number One, a downbrokenbeat with dark scarey
windy sounds and groans, some synth, and a minimal piano. Track 8 is pretty
good, Hit It - very trippy, cool. But most of the stuff sounds a bit
pretentious, maybe I dont get it, or what.
