surge0005 PRETTY BOY CROSSOVER - 'The Building and Formation' "Originally intended for release on UK label Skam Records, "The Building And Formation" is the second album from Pretty Boy Crossover [PBXO], the first with the band as a two-piece. Far removed from the computer-based digital trickery of many of their peers, this Australian duo (Cailan Burns and Jason Sweeney) produced these tracks entirely at their homes using an 8-track recorder. The imperfections of the cassette masters are as much a part of the aesthetic as the crunch of lo-fi drum samples and the hum of wire and circuitry. The old machines that the band use (including a variety of analogue keyboards and an 8-bit sampler) lend an organic quality to the music through their unpredictably. The band members themselves often can't pick the trajectory of their sounds, the way in which they may emerge. While certainly being concerned with the sound of machines, Pretty Boy Crossover aren't interested in letting the technology be the focal point. Instead they use it here to create ten different emotional atmospheres. The duo may play with machines like hildren with access to new toys, making strange sounds with their boxes, but they always create something beautiful, expressive and moving from the artefacts. :: tracklist :: 01. x-3 fader 02. speeldos 03. blu-glo 04. lines half spoken 05. dekoi 06. insect architecture 07. 2-26 transformer 08. sub holiday 09. oranjebloom 10. audio letters Track 09 'blu-glo' is available on net-label Monotonik as MP3: http://www.mono211.com/content/releases/mtkmp24.html surge0006 VIM! - "Linden - Home of the hits" Vim [aka keith baylis], has been wowing underground 'demo-scene' collectors for years with his heady blend of nostalgia, classic video-game style, and fractured beats, agit-prop style. If you ever wondered what a blend of Tim Follin (classic Commodore64 composer!), and a mellowed-out, nostalgicised Squarepusher would sound like, then you've come to the right place. As well as receiving airplay from UK legend John Peel [ under his guise 'Vom' - on Welsh label Oggum ], Vim has had music included on a Playstation game ['Tank Racer' ], and has just recently remixed US artist Marumari Carpark Records]. :: tracklist :: 01. art of spelling it rite 02. winging it 03 you know laura 04. the snow set 05. shut down and sit up 06. hot darts action 07. just some pings 08. how we wrote promotional video 09. hot rum and lemon, gannet! 10. exists in bad sectors 11. leopold 45 12. jackie batey 13. better known as craprak 14. having a tinkle 15. saftey blitz 16. angel delight saved me 17. thin strips of you 18. something about winter Three tracks from the album are also available at the excellent net label 'Monotonik' as MP3 !
