Jack Smith was a filmmaker/writer, he did very extravagant theater, he was amazing. His film "Flaming Creatures" was very pivotal in a fight against censor ship in Film, it was banned and Ken and Flo Jacobs as well as others fought very hard for it. Anyways The Table of the Elements label (RLW, BERNHARD G?NTER,..) released 2 cd's of recordings that Jack Smith did with Tony Conrad. They are FANTASTIC.(the first one "Les E.G.'s Dammnes" is my favorite) Jack Smith reads his stories which are fantastical stories, with music by Tony Conrad, and many times other people reading with jack. Jack is all about being flaming gay. Instead of hiding from that which then was even more taboo then it is now, he made his whole career about it, he over exaggerated it, and it's wonderful, it's comic while still being very expressive, showing hardships that he deals with, and I think it is also an effort to show the absurdity of many peoples issues with homosexuals. I highly suggest these cds to anyone interested in trash film, Jack Smith, experimental theater... It is argued that film made by Homosexual filmmakers is some of the most interesting experimental film now a days, it is still desperate, there is still something to be said. Also suggested is "Roy Cohn/Jack Smith" a video of a play about Jack smith shown in contrast to Roy Cohn, the play is a one man show by a Gay man who also had aids (as did Roy cohn and JAck smith) (all 3 of them eventually died of aids), the filming is done in a very nice way, hard to explain, but it's defintatally knowledgeable of it's being a film and not a true to life representation of the play itself, and the play is knowledgeable about not being a true to life representation. anyways i think you can get jack smith's cd's here: http://www.anomalousrecords.com/ forced exposure used to have them, not sure if they still do. I guess this is highly off topic, it does tie into noise, and experimentation.. I figured someone on this list might have interest in it. -Alex Norman also check out (early abstractions by harry smith, a film of hand painted animation, and other various kinds of animation) _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
