Anyone who was there care to provide a more detailed review of Boards of Canada's set? i.e. did they use any visuals, how much did they actually play and how much was pre-recorded, etc. etc. etc. Any opinions on the new material would be much appreciated as well. Needless to say, I wish I could have been there :-D - jake -- "In these high charged moments, where time and history are supposed to come to a cross point, it's not a time to soberly step back and consider all the questions in the universe. erm.... I've rejoined especially to get the best of this wonderbar discussion on live electronics etc.. as its my forte. Boards I thought were AMAZING.. sound was absolutely divine.. nice change from the shockingly crap PA at the Lighthouse party. visuals were the same as they used there. hmm... Nearly everyone I spoke to where highly unimpressed with the whole idea of boards playing live and were even more disgusted by the boys deciding to play totally invisible to most but those at the near front. There was no light on them.. at all.. and attention was mostly directed to the visuals. However.. because the audience were mostly indie kids (no offence!) the visuals were unappreciated, and after so many bands like Lambchop and the like playing live slide guitar and grand piano, they did look quite measly. But I was so happy to hear some new stuff.. ;D Loads of people were saying that they were practically playing back a DAT, but one of Boards was playing keyboards.. hence a VERY different sound for most of the synth lines.. in contrast to Autechre who appeared to have half as much kit on stage as Boards, had no lighting AND no visuals, but managed to jig up and down crazy style enough to divert the attention of the fickle (EXTREMELY static) punters! I mean.. Boards' had a large mixing desk a keyboard and a computer up there.. (too dark to get any specs), and Autechre had what looked like and 01V, an MPC2000 type apparati and one other piece of equipment which I couldn't see because I was too busy dancing like a spaz.. ;D it's difficult being in a live set up like bOards who aren't happy with being in the spotlight, and I think they managed it well. they looked more like badgers about to be run over then arrogant idm types playing solitaire behind a laptop! (which is what most people seem to be saying they were doing) seeing as most of the bands playing ATP excel at playing live and the art of interpretation and jazz type improv its no wonder they looked so weak.. :( But everyone raved about autechre more even tho most weren't dancing or even nodding their heads throughout the set.. and boards everyone were getting down to more. oh... and new material is AMAZING. mmm.. lots more interesting then the last EP made it out to be.. xx cheers.. |j|o|

Huh? The sound was absolutely crap. It may have been better than a previous gig but it still sucked. The room (cereal box on its side shape) didn't help but I've heard far better in the same shaped space. Farts and crackles all over the place. There was a _REALLY_ nasty standing wave just in front of the sound desk (which perhaps explains why it all sounded so crap) and nasty echoes off the back wall. Ugh! However, BoC were great!

Their music sucked. Well the venue was a bleedin' Pontins holiday camp dance hall.. I don't think they're too worried about standing waves or acoustic damping in a venue like that! but from the front the sound was lush. Not ear bleedingly loud, and the deep sub bass didn't distort the melodic line too much.. not bad for what they were putting the poor PA through.. I like my music to be bass heavy anyway.

nice to hear someone who liked it! ;D

It's a listening thing really. The rhythmic changes etc were a lot more subtle then most autechre I've heard.. (possibly because they were playing 15 min long tracks?) so once you get yourself into that kind of gear when your ears are working hard to pick up on those changes its easy to find interest.. unless you really loath a bit of autechre. ;D it's a bit like listening to music for 18 musicians by john cage.. if you really want to be wanky about it. |j|o| --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
