their latest album on mute/blast first is really really good. it's called e luxo so and it their most complete work up to date imo. the earlier stuff is darker but this the best one, very slow, moody and well composed. highly recommended. maybe you can find mp3 previews on cdnow or mutes website or something but the album is really best in it's whole and not as individual tracks. /franz At 08:07 2001-02-20 -0500, you wrote:

I am personally a big fan of their later stuff, which is probably very similar to their recent live performances. I'd *highly* recommend "MI Media Naranja" and "E Luxo So," and then work your way backward (although the first release "prazision," isn't that good imho). cheers, /derek At 08:07 AM 2/20/2001 -0500, wells wrote:

Yup, it was released yesterday on Mute/Blast First in the UK and Kranky in the US. I've had a promo for a few weeks now and it's... well, another Labradford album. :) It's good if you like them (which I do), but not really groundbreaking. "With their fourth album, Labradford have once again broadened and varied their sound, while maintaining their distinctive identity. Mi Media Naranja adds a string section, Fender Rhodes electric piano and slide guitar to the trio's sound bank. It is the most cinematic of Labradford's recordings to date. The music alternately stretches, ripples or lofts its way past the listener as if it was coming off a screen and not through speakers. The sounds here are reminiscent of John Barry, Bill Evans and most of all, Labradford." taken from FE, this is my favorite labradford album, although e luxo is very high on the list as well. GM

Ah, Labradford... Their new one ("fixed::context") is a real masterpiece, from the almost 20 minute opener to the closer with the synth, bass, and guitar tuned and processed so similarly. I enjoy the feel of their latest material... it seems to be bit of a return to their older sound. 2 tracks (?) are heavy on the bassdrum on the downbeats fading in and switching off with the bass guitar being strummed... a bit of Pan_American seeping in there. The good news is that if you like their sound, there's a lot for you to purchase. (5 albums, plus the new EP, plus some other stuff) Since they're on Kranky all of it is cheap, especially the vinyl. You can order direct from Kranky (www.kranky.net), and everything is in-print. Their previous two albums ("Mi media naraja" and "E Luxo So") involve more acoustic instruments, such as strings, and remind me more of, say, The Rachel's. And if you really can't get enough of that sound, I'd also recommend Windy & Carl, Low, Bowery Electric, and Stars of the Lid as bands to investigate. (and of course side project Pan_American, which is more of an exercise in Chain Reaction - styled 4/4 epics) Andrew -| Andrew Schrock | aschrock@cs.brandeis.edu |- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

except: a) avoid the last bowery electric album as it was an exercise in painfully bland trip-hop with the most tired drum loops out there b) the first pan american album is a dubby almost-chicago-tortoise-scene-sounding take on labradford. more cohesive than the last album, but less interesting. micah stupak /"\ laerm@soulfood.org ascii ribbon campaign \ / international bright young kook against HTML email X / \ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

> And if you really can't get enough of that sound, I'd also recommend HINT : wu-wei (PAN 028) In the Summer Hint recorded their new album on which they immerse the listener in an ocean of sound, treading a fine line between Noise and Ambience. "WU-WEI" is the third album from the French duo, consolidating their growing popularity and influence in mainland Europe. "WU-WEI" is cinema for the ears ! 10 tracksof raging beauty that create an imaginary soundtrack to the movie that runs in your head. The addition of cello, violin, and horns on several songs help to form a unique blend of instrumentation and electronic sound manipulations. The distinctively European tonalities merging with the sampled sources into vast columns of sound, both ancient and modern. Comparisons have been made with Can, This Heat and Labradford... but in actuality Hint sound like no-one other than themselves. CERBERUS SHOAL : "Crash my moon yacht" (PAN 040) http://www.cerberus-shoal.com Cerberus Shoal formed in the fall of 1994. The group practiced in Boston and played their first show in March of 95' at the NYC punk space ABC No Rio. Working through the Do-It-Yourself punk scene they released three records, went on to tour and record for years making music as art, expression and a way of life. Last year, C.S. have made three records: "homb", "Crash My Moon Yacht" and "Mr. Boy Dog". The first was released by Temporary Residence in Dec. of '99, the second is now released by Pandemonium Records. Wielding the usual drums/guitar/bass assortment of instruments plus piano, brass, violin, didjeridoo, theremin, flute, congas, & some other ones harder to identify... The group takes you on a relaxing trip. Go for a delightful journey into the world of original music. The band are currently touring Europe. The great struggle continues... ANDY'S CAR CRASH : formes (PAN 037) A. C. C. stretches and fragments the periods of time and transform various sounding matter/sonic material into an element of composition : A creation based on experimentations which provide a perpetual renovation. Pathologically, A. C. C. result from the collaboration of five autists who manage to understand one another, and found a way of expressing it in destroying their influences... From Steve Reich to Einstürzende Neubauten, not to mention Autechre. Most of all, they create a very strong and up to date music that dares to go beyond any restriction... Transgressive Electronica... Well, simply "formes" by andy's Car Crash. a parallel music for perpendicular feelings http://www.pandemoniumrecords.com

True.. good catch.. forgot about that. (or maybe blocked it out!) The album sounds like they just picked up a copy of rebirth and modified a few presets. Horrible, horrible stuff. I only sent it once, and only received one copy for that matter. If other people are receiving multiple copies then I've no idea why this is happening, but I apologise anyway. I'm in no way associated with Labradford and am not trying to bludgeon you into purchasing their lovely product. m.
