I was talking with a few friends about this the other day, and we've noticed that with a lot of albums (perhaps less within the IDM community) that the BEST song on the album - whether the hit single of the album, or one of the stand-out tunes on it- is always positioned at track number 9 or 7, but with 9 being the clear leader. Is this just in my head? ______________________ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Sunsp0t sunspot@subdimension.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

yeah. for a while, myself and a friend noticed that every hit song was track 3. of course, this was back in the 90-95 era, but it's like any situation - when you only have about 10-13 tracks per album, and with the quantity of tracks that come out, you can pretty much notice any trend you like :) i do like how a lot of IDM albums put really really good tracks towards the beginning, which i think is more of the result of IDM being a tad more obscure. in my opinion, obscure albums tend to be *much* more cohesive as a whole... likely because the artist makes the album :) so it starts off strong, and goes from there. but that's probably just in my head too :) but yeah, look at some older albums. you'll notice that a lot of them have the single as track 3 :) cheers, /derek - - - - - Alice could not help her lips curing up into a smile as she began: "Do you know, I always thought Unicorns were fabulous monsters, too! I never saw one alive before!" "Well, now that we HAVE seen each other," said the Unicorn, "if you'll believe in me, I'll believe in you. Is that a bargain?" --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Back in the days of LP, side two, song #1 was considered to be the "sweet spot," reserved for high-octane singles. I guess the relatively painless tracking possibilities of CDs makes the concept a little out-dated, but you never know what weird sort of marketing voodoo the major labels have cooked up. -rob --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Was that similar to the heavy metal mantra of "Third song's a ballad", cos that's "definitely true", but that was more to the singles market than LPs, but I wonder did they order them that way on the LP too... -i PS I used to think it was track 3 or 5 --- "R. Lim" <rlim@escape.com> wrote:

no examples of hand. Its one of those " See, I knew it would be 9" things....... I'll search for some. I always thought it was a plot to force the listener to hear the filler tracks before getting to the good ones. If a good track was on the first slot, noone would listen to the rest of the album. Again IDM/ambient music doesn't really apply in this case as the nature of the music is more thematic than slot-filling. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
