All right, so Estrocaro is getting a bit short for me. I've gotten pretty addicted to the lush tones and chopped-up flows, especially the cut-n-paste MC bits that pop in and out, but I'm a little tired of having to flip the record over every six minutes. Short of waiting for the next Prefuse/ other Herren project, does anyone have any recomendations on anyone making anything remotely similar with/in hip-hop? I'm aware of the Anti-con and Rawkus labels, plus Madlib and the general aboveground rap, but otherwise I'm a relative neophyte on the hip-hop tip, so one needn't be all that obscure in the rec's (although recommending specific longplayers helps if the artist has a large body of work out there). Check out Machine Drum "Now You Know" on Merck, it's hip-hop based idm with chopped up rap bits. A bit more electronic than P73, but they're moving the same way. I loved Estrocaro too from the moment I first heard it, and I've been tremendously impressed with the mp3s I found of "Vocal Studies and Uprock Narratives", BUT... these days I'm finding that this Prefuse 73 stuff just doesn't go very far. While the tracks that initially impressed me still sound great, some of the others seem like filler, and the lushness has begun to get sort of cloying. To my surprise, a lot of them have also started to sound more and more similar to each other. As someone (?) said a few weeks ago, it would be a great soundtrack to an hour-long Gap commercial; it's just that I don't want to watch a Gap commercial for more than a minute or so. I found the album on mp3 a couple of days ago and have been listening to it over and over since. I think its an incredible album and while the tracks from Estrocaro are definitely highlights, i can't agree with the rest seeming like filler. The first four tracks of the album are all really awesome and then right after those tracks are all the estrocaro tracks. I'd say thats a pretty solid first half of an album. I also really dig Afternoon Love-In. Anyway, I'm really looking forward to seeing Prefuse 73 open up for Tortoise next month. 'vein', the new cannibal ox 12" is fucking amazing. i''m talking shit-your-pants fantastic. it's been in (literally) constant rotation here for the past month or so. the album should be revolutionary. other than that i don't know what would be sonically similar to what herren's doing. but in terms of 'experimental' hip hop, lyrically i think the essential shit to check would be as follows: de la soul - ...is dead organized konfusion - stress log cabin crew (their early demos never saw a proper release, but you can probably napster the shit) freestyle fellowship - inner city griots company flow - funcrusher and whatever anyone tells you, don't buy into any of that idm by numbers pansy ass machine drum shit. He has produced some lovely hard-edged hip-hopish stuff.(some of the tracks are very BoC-ish even) You don't like anything he has produced, but you love Prefuse 73?
