My wife picked up a promo cd from the Book/Music store she works at of a band called Laika. It's really interesting stuff. The vocals are reminiscent of those backing Tricky. The music is unusual and cool. Anyone know anything about this group? thanks. -matT --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Laika was born out of the split of the awesome Moonshake, who were on Too Pure when it was a cool label. The band broke up, with Callahan carrying on his own ("The Sound your Ears can follow", etc.) and Margaret forming Laika with Guy Fixsen, Lou Ciccotelli and others. They released three albums, "Silver Apples of the Moon", "Sounds of the Telescope" and "Good Looking Blues". If you like this one, you'll like their older stuff... try Moonshake's "Eva Luna" LP as well, and the "Big Good Angel" EP if you can find them. -- Julien --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Let me add that the music fuses both electronica with a band setting creating something that sounds like some of the tracks off of Tricky's Pre-Millenium Tension album only expanded in a different direction. The album is called Good Looking Blues and the label is Too Pure. -matT --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I see you have already got a few responses to your query - yes, I have also recently got a copy of Good Looking Blues. If you are in any way wondering about the cover art, Laika was the first dog in space, given a one-way trip by the Russians. Historic footnote : apparently the band got their name after asking fans to participate in a competition to name the new offshoot of Moonshake. They are fairly reminiscent of the 4AD etherial fem.vox sound. Silver Apples was a good album too and there's a really nice track off it "If You Miss" on the first Macro Dub Infection album. This packaging mimics the design of a pack of cigarettes that were made in Soviet Union in 60s (note the "Dukat-Moskva" logo). I don't remember if there was that particular "Laika" brand, but the other details are reproduced pretty well. The Russian text on the left side of the cover is a play on the usual precaution about the harm of smoking: it says "USSR's Min[istery] of Health warns: music is good for your health". -- Stay tuned, MhZ mailto:mookid@sigent.ru ----------- What is wanted is not the will to believe, but the will to find out, which is the exact opposite. -- Bertrand Russell, "Skeptical Essays", 1928 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

They broke away from Moonshake a few years back. Love the Vibert mix on one of their eps. If you like that, try Moonshake's "Dirty and Devine" and work backwards through their catalog. Also, both Laika records are very nice...the latter being more polished. jeff Matthew Guest wrote:

A rule of thumb about Moonshake: The tracks with Margaret Feidler singing are fantastic and the ones where the guy sings are, well, not.

There are now 3 Laika records. I flipped over the first one the very first time I heard it. I didn't like the second one at first, but it quickly grew on me for being more consistently good and for it's musical inventiveness (nobody rocks 7/8 better than Laika). I've heard the third album twice and both times it annoyed me. I have not bought it, but I suspect that more listens would not help this one. It suffers from something that a lot of musically inventive bands eventually suffer from: prog rock wankery from too many virtuosic guest musicians. I haven't heard the guy sing... or at least I haven't noticed it yet. As for Margaret's singing, I agree wholeheartedly that her voice is really good. I've only heard this one release so far (Good Looking Blues), but my curiosity is peaked about them now and I'll definitely have to check out their second one based on your recommendation. So far I like this third release. It's not the "Blow My Socks" off kinda thing, but it's refreshing to hear someone trying something new out there. Thanks for the info, Chris. -matT --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
