you know, i hate to sound unimaginitive but really when i pay $10 for a "music" show i want some sort of dynamic variation, rhythm and/or melody for my brain to latch onto. i don't need 4 on the floor beats or happy major key stuff but four 20 minute sets of "watch me layer one gratingly digital layer of sound atop another and then filter it down to a rumble and bring it back up again" gets old after the first set. experimentation and textural exploration is fine, i have seen fantastic laptop based sets by Ryoji Ikeda, Kevin Drumm and Nobukazu Takemura in the past year and none of them were any less experimental than last night's show, but they were all about 100 times as interesting. just my .02c, i'm very interested in hearing opposing views josh -- String Theory : Digital Music for Humans http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/index.cgi On Thu, 20 Jul 2000, M Mercer wrote:

while the MEGO people do seem a little too serious, i cannot think of a label that has put out more consistent releases that keep my attention and make me anticipate more. the new _music for an isolation tank_ cd is one of the BEST experimental releases i have heard in a while. live - well, i have never seen them, but have heard mixed reviews. saw panasonic though - one of the best electronic shows ever :) chris. Will just add that I fell asleep during last night's show in Detroit.... Dunno...4 sets that didn't really seem that much different from each other, made for it to just drag on. Lacked much of the playfulness from the Fenn O' Berg CD, and seemed to all follow a pattern (build up to wall of noise and stop. Well, I could put together a Mego track for you in about 2 hours, and it would be equal to or better. ;) Don't get me wrong, I own the Fennezs and Pita stuff, but, it's nothing Merzbow hasn't been doing for years. And Ryoji!!! I love his work. And in interviews, they really do act like jerks. I mean, I love noise, but seriously, it's not very difficult to do. So don't get high and mighty about it, you know what I mean. It takes quite a bit more skill to fuse noise with listenability. And that's what we do. At our show with lopez, many ppl commented that we were the best of the evening ;) no-disrespect- taken ;) I don't know if I feel the same way, I totaly loved Lopez's set. It was top-notch! My oh my, aren't we a little high on ourselves? Let us compare Mego vs Twine... Mego has over thirty releases all in pressings of around 1000 each - most of which have all sold out - whereas Twine have a handful of cdr releases and two official releases which are getting, at best, bland recognition from a handful of fanzines and mp3.com dwellers. Any one Mego label release has probably sold more than all Twine releases combined. Mego has a worldwide reputation and critical acclaim for excellence in experimental electronic music and has headlined at worldwide electronic music festivals whereas Twine is a regional US outfit which is most likely destined to be a career opening act and/or rave bill filler. Mego has a successful international e-business called MDos which sells music and merchandise from THE BEST experimental established and underground artists and labels around. At last check, Twine's music is not listed in their catalog. Coincidence? My point is that you dont have to like Mego's music or even respect all that Mego has accomplished, but dismissing it as simple shit that anybody could do is simply ignorant - especially from a musician who should know better! I see you missed my point. I appreciate noise as much as anyone. My point was listenability vs. noise for the sake of noise. I like both. But one takes more skill than the other, there is no disputing that. I appreciate your defense of Mego though. It's good to see dedicated fans. That's what helps the little guys survive. I'd do the same if you attacked someone who I respect very much like John Cage, or Autechre. As far as Twine goes, we are working hard to make music we like. You can never please everyone. Funny that the only defense you had for the Mego ppl was to attack Twine, which is a much younger entity. I'm sure that Mego started somewhere also. Ah, how quickly we forget these things.
