The Staples Singers gospel music is absolutely astonishing, beautiful,
spooky, complex. Check out songs like "Uncloudy Day", "I'm On My Way", and
all the early songs where Pops Staples plays that amazing swampy tremolo-ed
out guitar.
Also great: The Soul Stirrers, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Mahalia . . .
however current pop gospel ala Kirk Franklin IS nasty, it must be admitted.
