I remember some machine which basically had one "Record" which you put on the turntable, and you treated it like a normal record, except, the "record" was hooked up to a computer and it was actually some sort of electronic device with which you manipulated a sound file. Anyone know about this? more info? bill wright wwright@clemson.edu <http://hubcap.clemson.edu/~wwright>

There's the new Vestax machine coming out in 2000 that will allow you to cut your own vinyl at home, but until then, no ideas. ---The Objector has spoken.--- "The goal of any writer is to acknowledge the numeric, programmed basis of his mind, and then supercede it. First one must explore the agonizing limits of patterns, their octahedral vultures and box-shaped emotions. After patterns are mastered, we seep into the mist of the patternless, passing through the thickest and thinnest of atmospheres. At each stage, patterns and non-patterns are grafted atop and within the gray matter of one's mind. At the nova point of summation the scar heals, erupts and bleeding anarchy blossoms like a larval butterfly." -The Objector October 6, 1999

Well, you can get acetates cut at a number of places, but acetates are made from softer material than vinyl records. I've seen varying information, but as far as I know acetates (sometimes called dubplates) are good for around 50-100 plays. In other words, scratching would probably destroy 'em pretty quickly. (population probably ~2000) serious! the man lathe-cuts as few as you want and i know he's done promos for the beastie boys.. i have a several items that have come from his garage including a very bad 7" by sonic youth's lee renaldo. friends have cut as few as 1. very cheap too. quality? questionable... but.... can't find an address right now (though the one in my first line would work) ... but if there's some interest, i'll hunt a longer one down.. .

Hello, I dj for an underground hip-hop group that would like to stop performing with DATs and tapes altogether, but can't find an inexpensive way to press vinyl copies of their tracks. Most places will only press a minimum of 500 copies. Any suggestions? Thanks. shepherd@sirius.com| A L L I E S craze develop j-smoke infamous spictakular [Just a fan of this crew and not a member]

the quality can be rough, and it varies from record to record. i have a dean roberts/guy treadgold _cassavetes_ lp that has to be coerced to let the needle into it's tight little groove. as for how useful lathe-cuts are to a hip-hop DJ (especially if you want to scratch), i don't know.

there used to be a web page for king records hosted by imperial records (i think). it had prices, quantities, mastering requirements, description of the polycarbonate stock he uses... you can gets custom shapes and some horrible color labels as well. the sound can be kind of rough, but it can also be nice and tactile (like most of the dean roberts/white winged moth stuff). the more recent lathe-cuts i've gotten have sounded/played better. could be just a coincidence. anway. give king records money. hOLY mOTHER. Is this for real (even though it isn't available yet) The possibilities are endless. The only real question I have (after reading the pages on their site) is: Can it react to the pitch control on the turntable? Shimone "C. Desmarais" wrote:

Yes, endless... :) Actually - there is a company in Florida that is making Mp3 turtables. I believe it's basically a slimmed down computer that is setup just for mixing and playing mp3 files. Evan B. who was just working at Mp3.com in the Electronic Dept., just left to work for this company as a VP of something. At any rate, he said this box was IT! He did a gig before he left and had something like 200 mp3 files on it - available for mixing. I don't DJ, but I like the Idea of it all (DSP...). I'll see if I can get ahold of him and get some info on the product. ---- BTW... I just uploaded 1.5 hrs of live music to http://www.mp3.com/live Within The Minds of Millions - Live Pt1 Physical Body - Live Pt2 It Sure Hurts Getting Hit - Live Pt3 G-Loop/FreeformPercolation - Live Pt4 Might As Well Be Egypt - Live Pt5 Operation Freq-Mod - Live Pt6 An improv/ambient/experimental set from 9-23-99 in San Diego, CA Enjoy, Sonic Wallpaper ______________________________ http://www.mp3.com/sonicwallpaper http://www.mp3.com/live http://www.sonicwallpaper.com
