Consider the following possibilites: - waking up in the morning: brushing teeth, urinating, etc. - cutting the grass with a power mower - ordering a tuna fish sandwich at a local delicatessen - typing e-mails at computer keyboard, nearby cat purring Of course I'm half joking, but on the other hand I'm half not joking. You might consider Olejandra and Underwood's work for some found sound treatments. "The Children's Album" has eerily transfixing material like "Kids Playing Baseball, East Village, NYC." And you can't beat the innovative packaging: a piece of construction paper, a cut-out of a strange card depicting cartoony telephones used to illustrate a math problem (at least mine looks like that - each one is different, I believe, and made by hand). Much of the material involves random people singing strange little songs from their youth...not necessarily in tune. Oh yeah, if you're smoking banana peels and you listen to that track, you'll hear subliminal sounds of kids playing baseball. - Fred Church bigkumquat@aol.com http://www.thelocus.com/kumquat (where *free* postage-paid kumquat cd's wait patiently to be sent to *you*)

Actually, lately I have been considering the possibility of making a feeble attempt at recording some of this type of ambience (I live across the street from a train station) and I was wondering if anyone on the list is familiar with equipment or setup for doing this. Will any 'ol tape recorder with a mic work or are there some limitations that I am unaware of? Shimone BigKumquat@aol.com wrote:

I recommend buying a PZM microphone from radio shack and just using either your computer or a tape deck to record the sound. suspend the mic out the window facing the train station and attach the wind-breaking foam decal to the mic to reduce the rumble of wind on the mic. These mics are about $59 and pretty unbeatable pricewise for ambient field recordings. solenoid On Mon, 27 Sep 1999, Shimone Samuel wrote:
