We have recently experienced many threads describing what idm music people on idm list like, prefer to listen, would take with them on desert isladn and so on. I have another question which furrows my mind. What other types, styles, variations of music idm people like, listen, etc. In other words I would propose to make top ten list of non idm music you like. Or maybe just list of styles which gets on with idm in your hearts. To start with (and maybe finish if none supports the idea) I propose my lists of styles and artists on the subject: Top non-idm 10 (no order): 1. Dub (Scorn, Bill Laswell), 2. Guitar (Praxis, Sol Invictus, Death Cube K), 3. Death metal (Napalm Death, My Dying Bride, Anathema), 4. Goa (Kox Box, Infinity Project) 5. Drum'n'bass (Animals on Wheels, Plug, Amon Tobin) 6. Jazz (Red Snapper, Funki Porchini) 7. Ambient (Brian Eno, Robert Rich, Lustmord, Rapoon) 8. Detroit (Holy Ghost, Christian Vogel, Neil Landstrumm) 9. Industrial (Ministry, Godflesh, Techno Animal) 10. Just Ninja (Irresistable Force, DJ Vadim, Neotropic, Coldcut) Of course, I admit that idm style (and any styles) is very blurred at the edges and my opinion on some non-idm artists may differ with yours. I would really like to see what you all like. Alien

Mr. Bungle/Secret Chiefs/Patton (not FNM, tho) 10. um... probably that early academic electronic shit (Parmegiani, stockhausen, Xenakis, etc.) only recently discovered thanks to a certain list members hotline server....

GOOD GOD!!!!! Never did I expect to this *this* name pop up here in IDM-land :-) Wow, let me recover from that surprise ... Hey, I met him in France after collecting his stuff here in South Africa and in true groupie-style followed him (and the Bagad Beimor who were his backing musicians) around various Fest-Noz and concerts in Brittany and also at the Edinburgh Folk Festival. And even stranger, one of his early albums (which I've had for years) was produced by a Cape Town retail marketing guy ... {{erm, cough, sorry for that gibbering outpour; I'll stop now}} I * np : Pan American (Kranky)

Well, I know it's a bit late but I've JUST gotten back from overseas so here's a few Raven suggestions for cool non-idm stuff currently rocking my world: 1) John Zorn and Tzadik-label type "Radical Jewish Culture". Other groups include: Masada/Bar Kokhba (John Zorn really); Dave Krakauer and Klezmer Madness; Naftule's Dream/Shirim; Uri Caine, especially the Primal Light CD on Winter & Winter; Dave Douglas (principally for "Charms of the Night Sky, on Winter & Winter); Hasidic New Wave; Klezmatics; ...and the list could go on so I'll leave it at that smattering... 2) Tom Waits; 3) Pop Will Eat Itself; 4) Massive Attack; 5) Bratsch, a French gypsy hot club/klezmer group; 6) Nick Cave - especially earlier stuff; 7) Some (other) Australian bands worth mentioning: Not Drowning Waving/My Friend the Chocolate Cake; The Clouds; the Triffids; the Whitlams; etc etc etc.... 8) How about some classical composers: Stravinsky, Ravel, Debussy, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Schubert (chamber music), and on and on... [Speaking of Debussy, what does everyone think of the new Art of Noise album? It's so cheesy I feel like I ought to hate it but I just can't - I've listened to it so much since I got the promo in London, and I love it...] 9) And of other pop/rock artists, notable are: Beastie Boys; Bjork (fuck off Wells *grin*); Tori Amos; The Pixies; They Might Be Giants; early/mid Depeche Mode; early/mid Cure; The Smiths; Sisters of Mercy; etc... Ahem I'd better stop there I think! btw, I consider Ninja Tune etc to be part of idm, and even perhaps drum'n'bass along the lines of Arcon 2 and Dom & Roland, who I think are both brilliant.... I also consider the more experimental electronic stuff like Mego (especially Fennesz, Farmers Manual and General Magic), Matmos and Lesser and so on to be idm. Sorry, I haven't read most of the responses to this post yet, so I hope there's not too much redundancy. -- Peter Hollo raven@fourplay.com.au http://www.fourplay.com.au/me.html FourPlay - Eclectic Electric String Quartet http://www.fourplay.com.au Raven: experimental electronic http://www.fourplay.com.au/sound.html "Of course, dance music can be a music where you lie on your back and your brain cells dance" -Michael Karoli of Can, quoted in Wire mag.
