i thought the idm dream was to listen to something that makes you
feel smarter than the average bear.. :P
i agree that there is plenty of music that needs to be listened to
repeatedly to be enjoyed, mr bungle's first album works that way for
me, simply because the structure of their songs is usually more
complex (ie far more parts than simple verse chorus verse format)
and unless one knows what to expect, it sounds like a mess because
they change what they are doing so rapidly.. EP7 isn't that complicated
though. most songs feature either a very straightforward or very sporadic
beat and a few tracks have a melody w/pad sounds as well; not too
challenging. most of the content of the album is them playing with timbre..
not complicated, often boring.
my only problem with people saying listen again and again and
again until you like it about autechre is that if it wasn't autechre, you
wouldn't be listening again and again. listen again and again
to, say, Soul Coughing, or Tool ;) and i bet almost every listmember
here would find something they like, some kind of richness or depth
or other such vague term.
and again .. if someone doesn't like something, it's okay for them not
to like it, they don't have to listen again and again; i've listened to EP7
enough times to understand it, how it works, and it hasn't made me love
it much more, if at all.
the idea seems to be that autechre is such incredibly good music that
anyone who doesn't like it, doesn't like it because they don't understand
it, and if they DO somehow manage to comprehend the "majestic depths",
the "hidden synergy of the sonic structure", etcetc, then they'll suddenly
fall in love with the music. that's just silly, ae is good but not that good. i
don't think anyone can be that good..
anyway, i dont know why im such a sourpuss today; im not anti-ae or
anything, just don't like EP7 much is all. :) and this isn't directed at any
one
person in particular, btw, it is just a mentality i'm addressing, i guess.
