Herbie's best moments IMO are the "Headhunters" (73) and the "Thrust" (74) albums. Totally doped up electronic funky stuff -- both amazing. And samplespotting isn't hard either. You'll recognize a lot of moments on these two albums. Ah well. They're good. Check them out. Franz -- WHEN DOGMA ENTERS THE BRAIN, ALL INTELLECTUAL ACTIVITY CEASES. - Robert A. Wilson

in addition to these seminal herbie-fusion albums, the original poster is no doubt looking for herbie's collaborations with bill laswell, of which "future shock" was the first. they collaborated several times throughout the 80's, but the most emblematic of the "future shock" sound were two more herbie hancock albums: "sound-system" (84) and "perfect machine" (88). this is a lot of quite-similar material to stock up on, especially if your ears are as weary as mine are of vintage ledernacken drum machines (as well as d.st.'s scratching never having progressed much after "rockit"), but "perfect machine" might be worth tracking down for a nice dj's secret weapon called "maiden voyage/p. bop." as far as interesting electro-type tracks go though, you're really just searching out one track per album (two in the case of "future shock" if, like me, you dig "autodrive"). for the truly masochistic, the "freakazoid" 12" and a maurice starr (i think called "electric drummer") single both have "rockit" bites _not_ by herbie himself. eric onnow: lilienthal : castor & pollux (emanate)

There are also a coule albums by the Headhunters, apparently the backup musicians from this time... I've seen one reissued, any opinions here? Looks like vocals are evident (yikes!)

Yes, I guess there is one good track per ep/lp. I found "perfect machine" a little uninspired. that is, one could easily save the $ for a rustier gem like "autodrive" (that is theone I meant by "chameleon/whatever", the GREEN one!!). I only recommend the "Metal Beat" 12" because it has samples of Yes "Leave It" from the same year and a good funk/industrial sound that is fun... Above all, avoid the "Magic Hands" or whatever that one just before Future Shock is... ugh! HH did some dull funk-pop stuff right before and after Future Shock not for the weak or easily annoyed...

Yes, the abovementioned albums are very fine, but for honest-to-allah electronic out-thereness, check *Sextant*, which came out around the time of *Thrust* and *Headhunters*. The good doctor Patrick Gleeson lets fly a cornucopia of synth tones that still sounds fresh as hell to late-90s ears. This is deep, cosmic stuff and I imagine the jazz establishment dealt with it about as well as it did with Miles' early 70s work--i.e., flabbergasted outrage. *Sextant* was reissued last year by Columbia [you could probably find it in any huge chain store] and is recommended to IDMers of all denominations.
