Dig deeper- that track is on _Faust IV_, available domestically in the US on Virgin sublabel Caroline; I'm pretty sure it's also in print in Europe if that's where you are (or "if it hurts your feelings too much" to get the US press). I guess you could call it "ambient" (haven't heard that comp, so I'm not sure what they're getting at with that term); if you find your boat well-floated to _IV_, move to _Tapes_ for a woolier ride. -rob

"Lauft" be toward the end of Faust IV, in my mind their best. prob the most song oriented of their output. although Tapes and Rien also hit. as does the 'x-rayed hand cover' record (cant remember name), which i dont have and which someone should domestically license. havent listened too closely to the new one. anyone know whos lined up to remix that? also has anyone an opinion of the remix record that came out a couple years ago? id love to get a cdr or a tape? anyone game?

Is there anybody who actually enjoys Rien de Faust? Having fond memories of the Faust Tapes from when they first came out, I was really disappointed by Rien and haven't bothered with any other Faust stuff since. Even the Tapes were 70% crap, imo - saved by a few hooky whimsical melody bits. Ah, good old Krautrock :-) Isn't it all going full circle, though? We're back with the German posse (plus some Austrians) delivering slivers straight from the cutting edge, jawohl! I * np: Compost 050

I'm pretty much in agreement with the rest of the world that "Rien" was mostly saved by the Jim O' Rourke production (plus the bonus presence of Christoph Heemann- anybody who can trace his exact contributions gets a four gun salute in a limited edition of 12). On the other hand, if you failed _Tapes_ at 30%, I'm not sure exactly what I can do for you. cheers, -rob

Ah, your post made me laugh :-) Thanks for that. I don't know. I have a sad history with Tapes. Went into a 2nd hand shop with a "friend" and I spotted a white vinyl copy of Tapes, hauled it out of the box and proudly held it up. He LEAPT across the shop-floor yelling "that's mine" and wrenched it out of my hand and bought it while I looked on in stunned amazement. And the bastard already has a normal vinyl copy of it anyway. That didn't help much to imbed my love of Faust. Not their fault, I know, but the way it happened. Lesson to be learnt : Always go shopping alone of with people whose taste does not exactly overlap with yours to avoid trouble. I *

OR go exactly to where you suspect the *goods* are first. I've been "scooped" by a young _protege_ (you know who you are, Ed) of mine on shopping excursions before. You guide them through the confusing shopping bins of life, pour out your hard earned so that others can learn from your "experiments", school them in the aesthetic of buying things blind/by association/by interesting cover art and Wham!...next thing you know they're maniacally waving the only copy of some gem for which you've made this entire trip. No wonder I buy on the internet. Actually, young grasshopper learned soon that the Master was displeased with such antics and seemed to realize the dire consequences which might have ensued. It is rather difficult in general to FIND many people who will put up with my tendency to go through everything when I want to buy. REAL shopping takes time, patience and gets the hands dirty. The "casuals" just don't have what it takes to hang with the foragers, so it's tough for me to find company that doesn't have similar tendencies. On a good binge, I sweat. My heart races. More than half of the thrill is in acquistion. Do I check what's in the listening stations? NO! That would spoil it. Always that delicate balance of an armful of REALLY ESSENTIAL stuff and bankruptcy/homelessness.How do I *spread* the expenditure out so my wife (who knows anyway) might not see it all in one crushing blow? How many more stores can I hit before they close or I need to eat? That's what I call shopping. You can see why I do more of it online these days...and besides, getting things in the mail is really cool, too. Stretches out that anticipation kick (as long as it isn't too long). jeff Irene McC wrote:
