Wasn't going to jump in, but since this thread is consuming my thoughts, guess I have to get it out of my system...

I've found consistantly that ae is like that. A release has to grow on you. Their music is terribly subtle. My disclaimer (out of place).. I wouldn't call myself obsessed with the group, but i've never heard anything by them I didn't find at least close to brilliant.

leave how a record is made for the gear heads. And let the gearheads separate the music from the technology more often to get a grip... I think it's easy to say you like some ae tracks based on a few songs, as their sound does vary greatly, at first listen. But generally they have a harsh mechanized (industrial sound) through most of their songs. It's those strings and pads and smooth sounds that throw a lot of ppl off. It's easy to put some of their music in the ambient/soothing category, but I think that's approaching their work from the wrong end of the spectrum. Nine times out of ten, if you pick a random part of any of their recent work, it's grindy and abrasive and filled with tension. So depending on which way the tension pulls you (towards soothing or chaotic sounds) probably shapes your view of their sound. So about a month ago I got LP5 and the peel sessions, and while there is definitely a difference between the two releases, when the two CDs are in my changer, there are times when you can't distinguish between the two (mainly intros of songs). But the progressions beyond the stark banging and off-kilter rhythms lend themselves to easier recognition between the two CDs (I mention this because I assume lp was created within the last year and the peel sessions' date is '95 i think?). Futher, it becomes obvious how much more complex their current music is. I await the US domestic release of EP7! The funny thing is that I've also purchased music from some of the other popular artists mentioned on this list recently, and upon first hearing it (no names will be mentioned) I can't help thinking these new guys are just ae wannabe's. And not that the music is bad, but Ae's sounds and rhythms and ideas are just so far ahead of the game, few other musicians seem to impress me with their 'new' ideas. In retrospect, Ae isn't for everyone. I'm not trying to preach, just defend. Plus they'd probably hate to have anyone pick their music apart. Some of it is just wanky, some is brilliant. re: emotion. typing at a keyboard at night in a room lit by a monitor with the garbage ep on the stereo is beyond words. fwiw... _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I know what you mean. Last year at the Plastikman album-release party "Consumed", DJ Clark Warner was in the ambient room playing a great set. The room itself was fantastic - it was a full-on ballroom with chandeliers, hardwood floors, and a balcony that they'd set up monochrome green terminals at, connected to the Net. So it was about 4:00AM, I was dead tired from dancing, and I decided to read some Analogue Heaven e-mail on this text terminal, when Clark dropped "Mantra One" by Theorem. I've always had a huge soft spot for that track anyway, and that moment just perfectly chrystalized my mood - tired, yet plugged-in and completely into the music at the moment. It was sublime. I had a similar (sort of) epiphanic thing happened one night when I was at my computer in the dark, 3 am, completely burned out in the "should have gone to bed 3 hours ago" sense and PAS' "Drone Sector" played....it seemed SO right. jeff William Van Loo wrote:
