im curious to find out what makes a person buy a "record". what is it beyond previous knowledge that makes you grab the release you for some reason have been eyeing for a while? what qualities do you look for in a "blind pick" so to speak.what kind or records ammuse you visualy..... im asking due to my recent pick up of michael fekesh's release marion. i had no idea of the artist, the artists previos affiliatin (funkstroung) or the fact that it was somthing i knew about but didnt remember at the time. i just saw the art, read a description and decided to get it instead of plug research and development (wich i knew kicks mucho ass). i am in no way dissapointed in this option to buy for i now wn the release i once told myself to buybut forgot about and also picked it for no reason at all other than what seemed to be devine intervention. beyond that even, ive also come to find that i am way more interested in what all the net based tiny guys are up to. all the boys and girls who work endlessly to make a perfect song but never seem to go anywhere with it. ive decided to not let the labels (in wich i am not knocking in any way) find the artist for me to bring him or her to my attention and instead find them myself b4 they get overrun with other popular opinion derived from the theories of music making and experienced music makers. i find that the ones unheard are the freshest in creativity, although you must sort through huge amounts of musicly uninclined boring crap to find the diamonds. whats your take on all this.... mike, www.8bitpeople.cjb.net --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

YOU SAID IT !!! And that's where the money goes ... Personally I don't do too much 'blind' shopping and try to have as much information / reviews / .ra clips before placing a mail-order, or else I try to get a few minutes of listening time in-store. I obviously still make mistakes and buy based on spur-of-the-moment decisions, which I later am disappointed by. The only blind buying I'm inclined to do is a follow-up album by an artist whose other work I like or a side-project. I have, on occasion, ordered in the dark and come up with bad apples... never rotten entirely, but gathering dust unplayed in a corner. I have to weigh in here and say that I *LOVE* buying blind and have done the great majority of my shopping that way for close to three decades. Of course, the more stuff you buy, the harder it is to be "blind". When you get a feel for labels, producers, side projects, etc., it makes the proposition less adventurous. I usually decline offers for in-store play (when I actually DO in-store shopping any more...most of what I get is through pbe, s://kimo Ear Rational, etc. etc.) when it's offered. I have squeezed LOTS of lemons, it's true, but stumbled on more of gems this way. There's a kind of a gambler's rush involved in "going on instinct". Of course, this is for the people who love to shop for music almost as much as the music itself - and also for irresponsible geeks who might not ever own a house. I really do watch the 15 or so lists I inhabit for heads-up on things. The objections to this method are quite rational, but I like the mystery. Hopefully, someday when my wife boots me out and I'm living in a cardboard box with racks of music and no players and you pass me by on the street, you'll pity me and let me borrow your boom box. I'll let you experiment with my new purchases :-) jeff Irene McC wrote:
