I felt particularly lucky to be in the position to help bring DJ Teep (Aran Parillo) to Iowa City to spin. He got on in front of a couple hundred sweaty dancing maniacs and made us all move to a set that started out with Electro and finished with some storming Drum & Bass. For f***s sake, why is england so shit? If anyone tried to mix multiple styles over here they'd get glassed probably. Unless, I just haven't been out enough recently and it's all changed in the last year, otherwise in most clubs it's 100% techno all night, or 100% house *all* night, etc etc...boring, in other words. It's not just England. America is not the land of the experimental style-mixing maniacs (hey, Teep :). You're just as likely to find boring all-one-style, same-tracks-every-time-you-see-them DJs in America as England. The trick is finding the DJs who do spin your bottle, so to speak. I've yet to hear Teep live, but I'd guess he's one of 'em. The problem is, mixing styles requires much more musical knowledge than does mixing only one style. Imagine everything you know about IDM, or electro, or techno, then try to imagine knowing that same amount about drum-n-bass, or house, or hip-hop. It takes a lot of dedication and enthusiasm, something Teep certainly has. This is something I totally aspire to in my own DJing - keeping it fresh by being a moving target. I don't see why Mike Ink can't sit comfortably next to Ectomorph, who certainly goes well with Kraftwerk, which goes with Carl Craig's 69 material like butter on toast...and it just keeps going. In parting - if you don't see DJs you like in England, have you considered investing in a pair of turntables? Yeah I know....it just seems at times that there's *so* many more IDM- type events going on over your way, people are more accepting of this music. Particularly SoCal :) (where tonnes of events seem to happen). That is, people are more openminded with their beats etc. Basically, my impression of the average dance-minded American is that they'll take whatever they like and they aren't ashamed of liking trax with different beats (not just 4-to-the-floor). Whereas the average Dance individual over here is into Speed Garage. Maybe i'm wrong, but i think America is definitely *the* IDM country of this year, lots of things happening ;) (maybe it should be part of the IDM poll, vote for best IDM country :)

Hehe, i've been mixing since '88 ;) (got proper technics in '91). Actually, me and some friends put on a gig (Synergik) in london a month or so back, and received only a handful of people turning up (the music was *literally* a bit of everything). You know, there really is a place for every style, from DJ Hothouse Monoculture to balls out eclecticism. I hear 3 or 4 DJs a week, both local and out of town talent, and I've heard exciting inventive sets of 4x4 deep house, and boring 'eclectic' sets. The DJs who realize that they're carrying on a conversation with the audience always do well. The ones who want to punish you, or prove how cool they are, or show how big their dicks are are always a disappointment no matter what they're spinning. I'm sorry to hear that the London club scene has kind of regressed to the idiot mean. That means one thing to me -- it's time to go back to basics, do it yourself midweek in a pub, and turn your back on Peter Tong and Paul Oakenfold and all the other corporate geezers. Hey There -- I'm glad this discussion has come up. I've been an avid mixer of styles/genres since I started Dj'g a number of years ago...It hasn't been an easy road when it comes to 'getting booked', for it has, in fact, worked against me. Not having a recognizable style (that they are willing to see) for a promoter to be able to slot you into the line-up. It's not that I always had to mix all the styles in one set...I enjoyed doing bangin Techno, manic Breaks, crazy Acid, Hardcore and Ambient sets...and, thankfully, there have been some wonderful and open-minded people who have booked me and i've delivered the goods in the style they wanted. But as far as being able to mix-up the styles at a party, well, that's another story. For that reason I got a radio slot. For the past 4-5 years I've been able to play everything my little heart desires....In one 3 hour show you'll hear experimental, IDM, techno, house, jazzy lounge, breaks, electro, jungle/d&b, hardcore, acid....and it's been a wonderful experience! It does take a lot to keep up with all the stuff that's happening in these genres, that's true...but to me, music is music, and it's all one happy family. I'm trying to keep the same sort of mix-up flow on my Internet show (8pm-10pm Mondays ET on http://www.technotica.com) But, sometimes, I do just like to play one style for the 2 hours, but usually play different ones week to week. Tonight, btw, it's Hardcore. I haven't played it in a long while, and I'm cleaning up my studio, so on to the tables and into the boxes it goes until I can get some shelves put up!
