What BoC track? Yeah, I've heard some FSOL, Aphex, and Squarepusher in their commercials too. It seems that someone at MTV knows what good music is, but they must be kept locked up in a storage closet somewhere. And what's this about MTV still airing "AMP"? Am I getting screwed out of their only decent show because I live in the midwest? I haven't seen "amp" for over a year! That's the deal?! -Dr. Smith

the best thing about amp: one of the few times i saw this program, they started it with NO warning by showing an oval video. my little crappy speaker on my tv started speaking to me in poppy, tonal tongues.. and suddenly my tv went to weird color textures. it was good fun! almost as fun as seeing mr oval almost die live (pushing buttons and moving a mouse is quite exhausting!). chris.

It is "one very important thought". It is some woman telling you that "this next video is something super-new and groovy and you should watch it", or something like that. Oh wait, I just remembered, I don't watch MTV... ;) Hess

This reminds me of something BBC2 were doing a few years back. They were actually playing snippets from various Autechre tracks (mainly Amber/Tri Repetae) during all their programme links. BBC2! This is a mainstream BBC channel broadcast to the masses. Excellent stuff. -- /\/)ark headspin - http://www.sonance.demon.co.uk/

How does anyone watch AMP? I made the effort several times in the past for 2:00 am Sunday (right?) and instead got MTVs retarded Spring Break Mission or a Road Rules marathon or some crap like that. When I have caught it, it's been decent, but there are only so many nights that I will go through the trouble only to have Carson Daley cracking jokes for 12 and 13 year olds. <rant id="MTVsucks"> MTV really sucks these days, maybe because I've grown up (I'm 23) but really, who wants to watch Karaoke? What about "video cliche"? What type of programming is that? I guess their target market is early teenage (13 or so) though, so maybe I'm just an OG. It's too bad MTV is watering down kids brains though... </rant> David

The real reason that MTV completely bites isn't that they hardly play music, and when they do, it sucks. It's that MTV is awaer of and recognizes talent, so you'll hear, say, 12 seconds of a Scanner song with some trippy little computer animations and an MTV logo during commercials. My younger sister (she's 17) watches MTV just about every day, so I've gotten intimately familiar with every popular Korn and Limp Bizkit song being played right now, since I hear them every day when I wake up, and when I come home from classes. Every few weeks I'll sit down and watch it with her, just to see if MTV is doing anything interesting. The week before last, I saw a brief MTV station ID clip with a Boards of Canada song playing. The imagery was just these dots moving around a background, it looked like a Flash animation on some web page. It was actually pretty cool; stylish visual stuff going on, BoC playing. I could like MTV if it were like that all the time. Then it stopped and they started playing a No Doubt song where the singer of No Doubt Goes Raving(tm). If MTV were just stupid, it would be one thing. Knowingly peddling dumb music is just annoying. Oh well, who cares about MTV. I wish I had some new music purchases to review from my trip to Berkeley yesterday, but I don't. I went into the city and stopped by Ameoba briefly. I got Gorgoroth's _Antichrist_ cd, but it's not very topical to the list, and it was a disappointing cd anyway. Get over it. MTV is a business, and their audience (13-20 year olds primarily, I imagine) do not want "flash animations" and BoC. They want Limp Bizkits, Korn, and all that other horse shit. If you owned the station, you'd do the same. - wells oliver / s0ewoliv@titan.vcu.edu

It's the same with all MTVish radio stations. A few weeks ago I was listening to WBCN in Boston and while the DJ was intoducing the next crappy track he was going to play, Borads of Canada was playing in the background.

i just can't help thinking that if aphex twin and boreds of canada were every other song on mtv/commercial radio that there would be a lot more sammy hagar fans than there are now. the tom green show is pretty funny. eric

It's even worse over here (UK). During the day it's non-stop pop for the kids, whilst during the evening it seems to turn into the R&B channel. All the decent programmes they used to have (Alternative Nation and Chillout) have long since been shortened, watered down or removed entirely. -- /\/)ark headspin - http://www.sonance.demon.co.uk/

Well, if you were thrown by the switch to DST like I was you would have been awake at 2:00 am MONDAY morning (ie, really late Sunday night) and would have caught some shitty drum and bass videos off the WaxTrax label and turned off amp like I did. I can't guarantee this is the normal airing time but it would kind of make sense - hide it in the least watched block of time during the week. You'll get your eyes worth if you can catch MTV's baby sister, M2 - all they show is videos, all genres, old and new, with only a bunch of annoying M2 bumpers to disrupt them. Too bad it only seems to be available on the direct satellite services. paul

Yeah, it comes on after 120 Minutes most weeks. I usually stick around for a few minutes and watch the first video.

To their credit, MTV do seem to be trying to fix this, by asking viewers to contact their cable companies, who will then pat response them off the phones. But hey, what can you do? M2 is the bomb, though. I often tape it when I visit my parents (they have a dish). Other friends do the same, and then we bring the tapes home and watch them. :) Jancey Dunn rules, too. Who else can name drop Madder Rose? Probably not that loser Pinfield... speaking of which, is he dead? He hasn't been on 120 Minutes in months, not that I'm complaining.

I haven't been following this thread at all, so i don't know what has been said. I will say that the two times I have watched AMP recently I was bored to tears. I think every single time I have ever watched Amp they play at least one or two Underworld videos. I know alot of electronic artists don't make videos, but playing the same videos all the time doesn't make it worth while staying up for. I think it was two weeks ago, they played three Underworld videos in a row. What the hell? Any of us that have watched Amp from time to time have probably seen those videos WAY too many times. Not to mention three in row! If there was more variety in videos and not so much trance, i would probably tune in more. _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
