Don't buy Technics RP-HT300. I'm battering a set at the moment and they're not bad, but I'm not too sure about the build quality. I bought them last year and the right driver appears to be distorting a bit already (probably blown it!), and the padding on the band is coming off. Not nearly as good as my old Sony MDRCD50s. They were damn near indestructible and a goshdarn /bargain/ at a mere GBP20 (USD32). I managed to blow them eventually, but it took a whole three years. Anyway, the Technics were around GBP50 (USD80). Try the Sony website http://bpgprod.sel.sony.com/category.bpg?cat=Pro+Audio#Headphones or http://www.headphone.com as suggested by someone else on this list (forgot who, sorry!). Another warning.... don't buy those nifty Pioneer DJ headphones.... they're really comfy, but they have no bass.... and overall the sound quality sucks. It's a shame because they're designed well, just sound awful and aren't worth the price ($150). I've been using a pair of Sony MDR-7506's for the last four months and love them to bits. Really sharp sound quality with clean bass, but not intrusive overwhelming bass like the Sennheisers I tried.... much better than the Technics, Numark, and especially those awful American DJ Superbass headphones I tried (they shake). I was very reluctant to buy Sony's, but after trying over 20 different pairs, I favored them the best. Never tried the Grado's, but I'm not sure how good they'd be for DJing..... Anyone know a good pair of headphones which are 'office friendly', I recently bought a cheap JVC pair just for at work but everyone else can practically hear everything I'm listening to when I'm wearing them, there's literally no sound shielding whatsoever. Any suggestions??

I have a pair of akg k220ms they are great for work and actually double nicely for DJing. They are very bright and bass heavy, so I wouldn't use them for mixing down a track, but otherwise they've been pretty solid and have been dropped and tortured quite a bit. :) -Gil --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

They don't fit comfortably (or maybe being a woman my head is shaped differently coz my brains are smaller??) Sound fine, but really annoying the way they keep sliding off and just not staying where I want them. But I guess there are many different models around and I should just try various ones... At the moment I'm very happy with el cheapo's called ProSound that work rather well. WTF : in a working situation, you just want the volume up loud enough to cue your intro... I tried them once a few years ago at some Audio Show Expo thing and yeah, they work, but at the same time it's a very unsettling sensation. I can't really put it into words, you have to hear it for yourself, but it honestly made me nauseous after only a couple of minutes. I don't know if it's something you can get used to, but my Senn's do me just fine.

I highly recommend the Grado American series of headphones... They're a small company in Brooklyn, NYC and their headphones are just incredible. Absolutely great response across the sound spectrum and ear fatigue is great diminished. Plus, they look like old ham operator cans when you wear 'em and make really good earmuffs in the wintertime. They have different makes, but the most economic starts around $60. you have a small head eh? what about those of us with huge fatheads? ~8) how are those noise-reduction phase-cancellation headphone jobbies? i hear they induce nausea... i need some new headphones too. i have these.. let's see... uhh.. JVC cheapy things i got at best buy for 20 bucks like 5 years ago. sound pretty damn good :D no bass anymore, though, and the vinylish covering over the felt is starting to wear off. i'm looking at the possibility of getting some good ones that don't weight a ton, don't look stupid, and sound good. it sounds like most of the recommendations so far fit snuggly underneath the $100 barrier... is that the predominant case for pretty good headphones nowadays? any minidisc recommendations for under $200? (off list perhaps?) the new richard devine mini-album is quite good. so's the new autechre peel sessions. i think the reason no one's talking about them is because we all know we already bought these by now... heh cheers, /derek - - - - - Alice could not help her lips curing up into a smile as she began: "Do you know, I always thought Unicorns were fabulous monsters, too! I really really dig my Grado SR-80's at work, but the foam cushions they use are so hard and don't sit well too long. Anyone else notice this that has a pair of Grados? I went back to my nice yellow spongy goodness of my Sennheiser HD-414s for office shit and kept the Grados at home. For whatever reason, the pads on the lesser model Grado SR-60's are much more soft, and cover the full headphones (ie no hole in the middle like the SR-80's), so that they don't come off as easily. You can get SR-60 pads for like $10 from wherever you bought the SR-80's. I did that and it made a lot of difference. Grado SR-80 rock. I love mine, and have 2 pair. -nate On Thu, 14 Jun 2001 rdhouse@ilstu.edu wrote:

If you really hate the pads, you can replace them with something else, but it'll change the sound of the phones. I have SR-325s, and to make them more comfortable, I just bent the headband out. It's metal, so you can pull them out so they barely sit on your ears (but of course, they'll fall off your head if you bend over). -- -Gregory I hate trying to come up with something worth saying in a .sig file. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Sennheiser USA grossly overprices their phones for us. 580s in the US cost closer to $200 new. -- -Gregory I hate trying to come up with something worth saying in a .sig file. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

http://www.headphone.com/ProductsOther/Grado%20Earpads.asp I haven't bought anything from these guys yet, but a friend of mine ordered a few things from them and was satisfied. Even if you're not in the mood to buy, they have tons of great headphone-related reading. They carry Grado, Sennheiser, AKG, Koss, &c. just wondering which headphones (with no amp) are most accurate in sound. like if i make music through headphones, i want it to be accurate when it comes out of most stereo systems. right now i have sony mdr-v700's, they are pretty accurate, when it comes to playing it through 2 jbl monitors, but sometimes i find the bass may be a little too much for most systems. someone did post a link with headphone reviews once, that would be appreciated.thanks in advance dustin

Never been a big fan of grado cans, more on the look of them and the comfort whenever i've tried them on.. I'm a big fan of Sennheiser HD600s.. I've owned a pair now for 3 years or more and they're fab.. I really love the soundstage they create, it is different to any other headphone i've tried so far.. it really works nicely (for me) with electronica stuff.. very immersive.. I drive them out of my integrated hifi amp's phono socket which i think is quite good, they do need a good amp to sound best, depends how good your phono equipment is.. the headroom above isn't a bad idea, there are plenty of other headphone amps around as well.. For work i use Beyer Dynamic DT-250 80s.. look on headphone.com under their headphones for work and you'll see they recommend this can soly for that purpse.. http://headroom.headphone.com/layout.php?topicID=2&subTopicID=17 they're so robust, repairable and great isolation.. they're a little dark perhaps due to the isolation but i really enjoy wearing and listening with them.. there's a nice contrast with them and my HD600s.. I've also got some etymotic ER-4P in ear canal phones.. very expensive, but very lush sounding.. quite difficult to work with though but if you travel alot and can put ear plugs in without a problem then they'd be perfect.. stonking 30db isolation means you can fly planes and never hear the engine noise.. their reproduction is very very good.. like the HD600s.. probably more accurate... but being in ear their bass reproduction is different to other headphones.. its all there and perfectly proportioned but next to more coloured phones and ones with bigger drivers they can sound a bit bass light... I really love them but haven't listened to mine in a while.. For portable use i have a fixup headphone amp.. i have an older version but its very good.. ~$100 and very very tiny (like a box of matches) they have a good power to drive headphones better than any normal portable and are even up to driving hd600s quite well.. http://www.fixup.net/ http://www.fixup.net/products/pktamp/smini.htm http://www.fixup.net/products/inlineamp/index.htm Very very good if budget quality is of interest as well.. I have the super mini, the super micro is even smaller, they're all home made (as you'll find are a lot of headphone amps you can find such as meta42 etc.. all of which usually do very well against company produced kit at much more money) Beyond that the best community sites for headphone reviews and information are http://www.headfi.org/ http://www.headwize.com/ I personally prefer the former but they're both great places to get help on choosing headphones, amps, and sources from a lot of people who've tried them all.. this advice is good for any price range...
