'Jockey Slut' magazine came out today, and in their 'What's Going on'? page, it had this bit on Aphex. "Aphex twin's next single - 'Window Licker' - will again have a Chris Cunningham video. The £150,000 script features an LA shoot involving limos and 35 dancing girls. It also featured a 6 page Squarepusher article, set in the location for his new video, a hospital in MIddlesex, where he's playin boyracer in a wheelchair, strapped up in a straitjacket! Chris Cunningham, (who incidentally looks like he could be Aphex's sweeter, more innocent likkle brov, same long chestnut hair, beardie action) ... doing his magic film bizness again. Talkin bout the new album ... 'The new album, the one he won't talk about, is however far removed from both of the previous ones. It's music made almost from the opposite direction. Gone is the meticulous drum programming to be replaced by looser live tracks performed by Tom himself. These new foundations are then worked on with his bass and keyboards to create a dark fusion sound that's more mature, closer to his idea of pure expression, and destined to challenge (alienate even) a proportion of his audience. "When I go to a record shop and hear loads of mediocre records", he offers by way of explanation for his sound, "it makes me go fuckin mental inside. Music's the most beautiful thing in the world, the thing that can take you out of yourself and show you new shit that isn't part of the objective real world, and yet we're suerronded by all this mediocrity! I've heard people say you can sell a thousand copies of anything," he continues more animated, "which means suddenly that musicians aren't musicians any more, they're simply people who can just about blag it. I'm not saying you should study music for X amount of years to do it but just shunting round other people's ideas is fucking sad".' (Jockey Slut, issue no. 15, August/September.) Aless

I like how boring the music is; that makes it a good parody... solenoid@europa.com <------+

I actually kind of liked it to tell you the truth, but I'm from Iowa, land of the easily amused. The whole thing was a laugh and a half. And believe me there is MUCH worse music out there by amateurs and pros alike.

hey, some great music has been made by minimal manipulation and editting, they should just do some more, but explore making all the changes really predictable and minimal as possible. That would intensify the parody side of it, imho. Some parodies are really simple lifts but amazingly sharper parodies for it: The Rutles, National Lampoon, Spinal Tap... I guess both of the last two are Christopher Guest, aren't they? I pray that Christopher Guest does a parody of techno someday. He has been so fucking _on_ with other genres... On National Lampoon's "Kung-Fu Christmas", I doubt even hardcore Curtis Mayfield/Tamla-label fanatics could tell it is a parody until after a few measures of the lyrics add up... aww, yeah! solenoid@europa.com <------+

I said it was boring in a bit of a tongue-n-cheek way, as the music seems like it develops more slowly and quietly than Aphex, which goes to reminds me of Aphex' change of direction over the past few years. Still, all in all, both Aphex/Tampex is more interesting music to me than 99% of the music out there. I always try to keep in mind that IDM (or whatever you wanna call it) is this really tiny veneer of avant-techno-whatever that has an estimated audience of ? (maybe some of the label reps on here can clue us in as to how many thousands of estimated listenners our "market" is...?)
