I've not noticed any reports on this yet, did the Boards of Canada actually play? - if so I completely missed them, careless of me. I did catch Farmers Manual PA their stuff. It was odd watching the three of them idly fingering their laptops, looking awkward/bored, sounding wired, with a huge steam engine looming above, occasionally stirring. Autechre played later on. Stunning. They just get better. On this occassion the beats seemed less fractured, with longer structures being formed. I had a right old dance. Are rumours of a new album true? ... notebooks out, plagiarists-ahh.

i think Farmers Manual was the best thing i saw, i think they felt moreAwkward than bored... actually the steam engine was the best thing i saw all day, it was incredible wasnt it! huge doesnt really sum up how big it actually was... gargantuan maybe The Surgeon/Mike Harris noise thing was pretty damn good too, squarepusher was ok, he played records by himself... a bit of plug.. a bit of MCing 'Super Sharp Pea Shooter'

I dunno Autechre didnt really move me, i fully respect what they do.. and find it quite admirable in a way that they havent actually developed that much since their second album (they obviously like what they do...) ,there was a very nice bassline at one point, some lush strings, the last track bored me for five minutes... but then i really got into i for five mins... and it hadnt actually changed! and then it started to drag again, i thought id recorded the autechre set on my minidisc... but it didnt come out! if it had i wouldnt be broadcasting the fact on idm for fear of my ISP going down from all the begging mails i would have been sent ;-) Steve

Yeah, the steam engine was great (when it went off, every hour or so, was the only time in the day that lots of people moved in the same direction!), in fact the whole place was great for a gig, very surreal moving around all these artefacts of the industrial revolution and coming across electronic music!

Personally, i found their set extremely dull and disapointing too much playing with an effects unit and not enough Surgeon (in fact i wondered if they had bothered to turn his gear on at all!)

Yeah, this was nice, squarepusher vs the steam engine!

I felt the same, i think i was trying very hard to enjoy their set, and at a couple of points i got into it (sounded really complex/intricate at times) but generally very, very Autechre!! (what are they doing when they play live, it doesn't seem to bear any relationship to what you can hear, i get the feeling i'm being duped by their 'live' performance : i'm probably wrong though!!) Highlights for me included Andrea Parker(?) playing NWA, and who were those two blokes playing along to a backing tape outside, one on a xylophone and one on an accordian, they were good. In the end, i gave up on trying to follow the playlists and just wandered around, staying somewhere until i wanted to go somewhere else!! All in all i had a very nice day :)) Mark. -- ____________________________________________________ Mark Hadley: mark.hadley@virgin.net ? http://freespace.virgin.net/mark.hadley/mark/go.html ____________________________________________________
