Another "IDM-ish" song used in a commercial I just saw. I don't know why I care, really, but I always liked the song. Orb's "Little Fluffy Clouds" was used for the new VW Bug commercial. I rather liked the spot, with the color of the car changing with the beat and spinning. Too bad the car is overpriced and feeding the lame desires of the 18-25 year old hipsters. (Like me...) "purple and red and green..." ShaneB

Hey, I thought that was great. Speaking of 25-year-old hipsters, why don't you tell everyone what you were watching - Friends!!!!!! Don't feel bad, I was watching it too. That and the Simpsons are my favorite shows. Anyway, you must've missed the next one. They used a song by Fluke. Damned if those two commercials didn't make me want to buy a way-overpriced Golf with a new hairdo. I'd rather see my favorite songs whored for a couple of bucks than another Rolling Stones song. It'd be nice if our bands made enough money to keep making records. One thing - why do only the European car companies use this type of music in their advertising? :-))) I'm trying to picture what kind of a hairo a Golf might sport. You wanna get the Golf convertible of course, and let your own hair do the talking.. or better still, get a 'techno haircut' (Luke Slater shave).

This is an interesting point : being in South Africa, we only get to see local-content commercials and my husband, having a recording studio, is responsible for making quite a large number of them. He often gets told to do sound tracks "in the style of" but generally no original pieces are used, due to the copyright laws making it run to quite a high price. Usually they seem to have fairly up-beat techno noise tracks, or else kitschy-classic string sections - I remember fairly recently hearing a *total* Firestarter rip-off. Um, minus the vocals, obviously >:-/ I *

Yes! My suspicions have been confirmed! I knew Toyota was ripping off major artists a few years back with their "almostGotItButNotQuiteTheOriginalTrack" soundtracks to their TV commercials. *sigh*... I guess it's just as well, since 99% of the people watching those ads would never have guessed what the music was based on. -- jr

So the new beetle is the raver car? Contrast that with VW's retro Golf (Trio's Da-da-da) and the 80's alternative Jetta (Lush and that happy Psychic TV song).

Is Mazda European? They've been using some Crystal Method track to pimp the new space-age Miata for the past month or so. I don't know the exact numbers but I've heard from very reliable sources that bands get something like $25K to license a song for a car commercial. Which makes me wonder if some enterprising idm'ish artists might be more inclined to write commercial jingles than to write music just for the listener. You know, drop in some samples about "power" and "drive," send the demo disc out to the ad agency, and then wait for the contract. pdm
