im wondering if anyone knows the type of effects used/that can be used to/were used for: 1.the effect on auqeam, the 5th track on Tango and Vectif (the sort of in and out high and low effect that is used for all of the beats and over most of the sounds) 2.what effects can be used to make those noisy buzzing sounds in The PEak(A.E., track 11, the Destroyer)? or to mak the beats hve the abrasive edge they do? thanks for your insight andy

sounds like it's maybe a flange or a phaser to me.

well, you can do one thing to give them an abrasive and "banging" edge.. use a flanger with a very narrow sweep depth/range and a narrow rate/sweep frequency ex: .1Hz and adjust the feedback levels depending on how much "bang" you want. you can do this without a flange sweep (by setting the rate at 0) but it sounds better with a small sweep. __ __\ \ / /_\ \ \_____/ www.freq-div.home.ml.org

Well, I haven't got the tracks you mention to hand, but I'm pretty sure you're talking about the feedback and distortion they use. With Mu-Ziq, I think he just shoved the levels up on his 4 track. I had a four track for a while, and if you jam the gain knobs and the sliders and all the EQ knobs to full you can distort the shit out of whatever you are doing. It gives it that raw edge, especially if you are only getting clean boring sounds from minimal equipment. There's an art to it though. If you get right on the edge of distorting the track, you get lots of mad high frequency sounds which you can manipulate with the EQ. If you've got the Jacob's Optical Stairway LP, you can hear this done more subtley towards the end of their track "The Naphosisous Wars". If you have a PC and a DJ mixer, you can do the same thing as with the 4 track if you plug the output of the soundcard into and input on your mixer, and an output of your mixer to the input of your soundcard. If you set up the levels right and turn up the output from the soundcard on you mixer while playing a record/CD through it, you will be able to distort the hell out of anything. If you have an EQ on there, you can also mess with it to change the effect of those mental frequencies. It's great - and it saves you money on buying those fancy FX boxes! Hope this helps! gb. PS I take no responsibility for damaged equipment from doing the above! PPS When you do it, you'll be amazed at all those records you've got that do it too. There's lots of different distortions you can make and it will solve that long lost mystery as how the hell RDJ and other got that mad fucked up sound!! -- /TheW i http://www.homeusers.prestel.co.uk/lwtcdi/all/ f o L D o dlr WTC "Let's decompose and enjoy assembling!"

yeah, i used a tascam porta03 a couple years ago to get 'the ventolin'. i just thought it was cool that anything i played through the 4track sounded really good and aphex-like. :) i pushed everything up, and i mean everything, HOWEVER, the individual gain on the channel that i was affecting was especially sensative. you'll find the sweet-spot between where the high pitch sounds begin and end, that's where you want to do the subtle tweaking. also, the whole unit was overdriven, so the sounds bled into other channels, but only certain frequencies, so the other channels ended up acting as pre-eq's kinda.. anyway.. i'll have that song i did up on the web in a little bit, it's a pretty cheezy song, i wrote it a couple years ago but you'll get the idea. (especially at the end of the song) http://www.doubtful.com/artists/szalemandre/iareyou.mp3 -eric _____________________________________________________ :: eric sherman szale@doubtful.com :: :: doubtful productions www.doubtful.com ::
