I'd have to agree with this one. The spam is a pain, but there are even more fundamental problems with newsgroups. Only the really large interest newsgroups (Star Trek and the like) get a decent amount of regular users. Most people just come and go, which means the same posts week-in, week-out (I know this happens here, but not half as much). The people on this list, in the great majority, CARE about music and contribute what they feel about what they listen to. It is also a forum for arists/promotors/record labels/fans to discuss what they want from each other (even if this doesn't seem to be happening quite as much since g303 (what happened to him?) & RDJ dissappeared). But still, where else would you have got RDJ and Black Dog arguing about music publicly? Certainly it would have never happened had there been separate Black Dog/RDJ lists/newsgroups. Remember when someone tried to set up and RDJ list like this one. Thank God that never worked. How boring would a solely RDJ based list be? The man and his music is interesting, but not THAT interesting! As for the Autechre newsgroup, what would happen inbetween Autechre releases. Surely there'd be almost nothing worth discussing besides philosophical debates as to their sound or whatever (which are fine here, where they belong and where there will be a difference of opinion). The best thing about this list is the diversity of music discussed. To cordon off artist like this is to reduce the power of this list for introducing people to new music, which is why I made eariler comments against all these Nazi 'clean up IDM' campaigns. If we cleaned up IDM the list would never move forward. Artists such as Luke Vibert would have never have been discussed for more than a few posts, because it would have been dismissed as off-topic. Ditto jungle (which IMO is still not discussed here enough). This is a progressive list we have here, unlike most others, and I propose we keep it that way. Gb. PS I'm sure there are many of us on the list who have bought something that they would not ordinarily buy, just because it has been reccomended or discussed here. I know I have. Surely this sums up what the list is all about - exploring music through communication.

This list really is a great tribute to the power of the net to facilitate collaborative endeavors. It is such a simple concept, and yet overcomes many problems I know I face every day, namely: - keeping up with the frontiers of electronica across the globe. - sifting through the wastelands known as the web, looking for the really bad ass cool sites. - knowing whether or not to buy Future Sound of Richard's Bedroom Part 3.14XII-2, on 12"/CD/Tape/MD/DAT/DCC, or DVD. - how truthful articles in magazines are, or "why record companies really _are_ out to screw artists over". By "problem", I mean that in its strictest sense. I've got plenty else to do besides read mail on IDM, and frankly, I delete over half of all e-mail that comes in simply because I don't have time to read everything. But if a subject line catches me, I'll follow the thread to see where it leads. At any rate, this list serves far too many purposes to really classify it as just a "musician's" list, or "DJ" list, or "trainspotter's" list... it's really all of the above, and a whole lot more. np: the sound of lightbulbs being changed, someone running by my desk, a conversation by the copy machine, a chair being dragged over a duct-taped down power strip, only to unplug said plug fro....... A list devoted solely to Ae would either get boring or morph into something resembling this one. Every list I've been on that was devoted to a single group either basically fell apart, or went to talking about a wide group of topics (most musical, but some not).
