Agreed. Not all recent Moving Shadow has been the dark stuff. Guardians of Dalliance, Basic Unit and Hoax have all had more relaxed 12"'s out lately. Personally, I prefer a lot of the darker stuff, but these three 12"s are still reccomended to those at the jazzier end...

Yeah, I was tempted to mention him, but his stuff varies so much and it's hard to pick out the more jazzy stuff. I don't know about counting on him to put in jazzy bits. His 12:01 track on Valve is one of the hardest (and best) releases this year. 0% jazz. Some of his tracks, such as City Lights from the Prototype Years, One Out of Many on the flip of Dillinja's Acid Trak, the Change remix from the V album, Urban Style Music on Metalheadz and his LA Fantasy track on the Cutting Edge comp are all the right side of jazzy, but his temprament can't easily be relied upon. His older Manhatten Melody track has a jazzy intro, but this is probably not reccomended as 2 minutes later in come the hoover basslines!

What's this like? Didn't much care for Computer State. Muted darkness, I thought. Saw the new Housakai (a Source Direct alais) on promo and was tempted as the last one (Black Rose) was excellent. If Enemy Lines is any good, it may sway me... ------ Andrew Cowper <acowper@dvcorp.com> wrote

I don't know about not going wrong. Sometimes the Bukem label sound strays a little too much towards cod-jazz with not enough step. I agree that it's great to ease you into jungle/d'n'b though... I wrote:

Well, I meant early as in not the new Piper single (hard as nails), but the forthcoming LP is probably more listener orientated. As for the old stuff, I don't know about insanely great. I picked up an old 12" and it was 'insanely shite' but each to their own!

Still their best album. 68 Million Shades was nice is places, but I find this and their newer stuff to be really muddled - too many ingredients in the mixture. One of the great things for drum and bass for me is the sparseness of some of it. Later SHJ stuff is all over the place. That Bank of America/Sunburst single is very odd indeed. Weird distorted wailing does nothing much for me.

I'm not sure if I agree. I don't reccomend later Spring Heel Jack stuff all that much (bar their Phosphorus remix). Ditto for Omni Trio, who has been working to a formula for too long now. I'll reserve judgement on the new Skeleton Keys LP, but the last few 12"s have been pretty uninspiring (Trippin' On Broken Beats/Twin Town Karaoke). Haunted Science was alright though.

Cheers!

Good jungle = everything on V, Full Cycle and Dope Dragon. This is some of the best music I've heard since I first started listening. I contemplated stopping buying music for a while (which I do occassionaly when the scenes seem to be getting stale) - the only thing that stopped me was the output of Roni Size and crew (Krust, Die, and Suv). The New Forms LP wasn't amazing (although I'm still waiting for that second set of vinyl to come out) and the V album a little dissapointing too, but all the 12"s have been classics.

I can't find much jazz in this release. Maybe in the drums. Sounds more like Autechre to me. And not Autechre at their best, either. Hidden Camera is overrated, I vastly prefer Ni-Ten-Ichi-Ryu (Two Swords Technique) which is the perfect example of sparse, minimal and original jungle. Still not that jazzy though. Has anyone reviewed the Modus Operandi LP lately. I heard Smoke Rings off it, and it was good, but I already have a few tracks on there (including the Ni-Ten B-Side, The Fifth Column, which I thought was a bland version of the A Side) and the vinyl is bloody expensive!

Jazzy yes? But 'step'? Only if you have mutated a few extra legs from listening to his stuff too much :-) Gotta go, Gb. np: Happy Birthday Theme (Traditional) It's my 21st today and I'm spending it discussing the minutae of sub-scenes within jungle. Could be worse, I suppose! :-) Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday to me (repeat to fade)...
