after a great bit of procrastination, i finally picked up DOWNLOAD's
"Charlie's Family." whether or not DOWNLOAD is elite, underground,
extra tracks vinyl only, or incorporates dancing bears into their live
show, i think they're "relevant" to this list. this disk is simply
incredible. a bombastic collage of incredible programming and sample
manipulation, the songs flow together like a soundtrack. (makes sense
given this is the soundtrack for the never released...as far as i
know... "Charlie's Family.") unlike their other work, this album only
contains about 10 minutes of actual "beats." the rest is pure "sound
sculpture." quite dark at times, especially when vocal samples are put
to use with sound textures which seem to leave a void in your chest...
anyway, i encourage anyone who's getting tired of the d&b thing (not
that d&b is bad. it's just fucking everywhere..) to give this disk a
listen. you don't have to be "Industrial" or whatever the hell you want
to call it. (never considered them "industrial" anyway.) just be your
lovely little self and take it for what it is. a swift, electronic,
kick in the ass, which melds beauty and mayhem into a nice little
package. danke..
