PHOTEK - MODUS OPERANDI
ouch, crushing disappointment. i was so hot on the Hidden Camera
single that i figured this had to be an instant winner.
unfortunately, it's not. it's good, pleasant listening and all that
(mostly - i find "aleph 1" to be extremely irritating with this
meandering analog bleep thing that just goes on and on for 8 minutes
without any point or purpose), but it's nowhere near the level of
Hidden Camera. in fact, the two tracks from the HC single (HC and
KJZ) are easily the best tracks on this CD, like by miles. oh well.
it's still worth listening to, especially if you don't have HC.
MOUSE ON MARS - AUTODITACKER
on the other hand, i picked this up thinking "yet another mouse on
mars record", fully expecting it to sound like the others, which is
good and all, but after two albums and a bunch of singles was getting
a little familiar. well, i was dead wrong. this DOES have the
trademark MoM sound, but once again they have gone off at tangents and
created some incredibly original and mind bending music. there's
house, jungle, even krautrock grooves, all filtered through the unique
MoM sensibility. i LOVE it. i think this is perhaps a bit more
accessible than their earlier records, certainly moreso than the last
one. if you haven't liked MoM in the past, check this out. i really
think they could get some converts with this one. it's just plain
FUN.
also if anyone has been sleeping on Cibo Matto, get with the program.
i can't believe i didn't buy "Viva! La Woman" months ago. it's great.
np: cibo matto.
