Review: Friend & Dr. Kosmos Single Of The Week 2x12" A1 - Doubt On The Human B1 - I Love You (huh) B2 - I Love You (huh) [Metamatics Flowing Mathematics] C1 - Career Opportunities C2 - Career Opportunities [Clatterbox Beatbox] D1 - Marmalade Ovakill D2 - Marmalade Ovakill [Daniel Ibbotson Constituent Parts] Releasedate: August 29 The 1st Knights of Sweden have stuck again. The ones with the fastest running horses, the sharpest swords and the most lethal spears. These guys are _the_ shit, people. Single of the week is certainly the single of the week. Single of the month even. 7 polished tracks from Friend & Dr. Kosmos whereas 3 of these are remixes from Daniel Ibbotson, Clattebox and Metamatics. This is the first release from Dot since the very succesful "The Knights Who Say Dot" crusade, and it's certainly a mark of quality to wait and release only extremely good stuff instead of - in fax manner - spit out a mediocre record a week. All the releases so far from Dot have been - yesiree - worth waiting for. The only track on this double vinyl pack not remixed is "Doubt On The Human" (I think a GFQ remix was planned, but cancelled in the last minute) and it's an outstanding 1st track. A Pet Shop Boys electro track with Casio 303 clones through vocoders. In a good kind of way. I suppose you've all heard "I Love You (huh)" on the "Knights..." compilation, and if you haven't it's no big deal. A Boring track, TOO repetitive and brings forward no emotion or feel whatsoever. Just too neutral for me, nothing special (this is indeed an exeption). The Metamatics version of the same is more interesteing, moody, laidback and funky. As far as I know this is the first thing by Metamatics since the 4 12"s + the CD on Clear, and if you liked those ones, you'll dig this as well. Have you ever heard acid-samba? Well... me neither really, until I heard "Career Opportinuties", C1. Some kind of bleepy breaksambabeat with a jumping bassline. Speedy, happy and wicked. A punkrocker shouting out different proffesions to a synthbass. Does it sound fun? It's fucking brilliant. My favorite track so far, a total killer. One of the first things I'll play on my next set. The Clatterbox version is... well... Clatterboxish. Not what I like, I didn't really like the things on Clear. Far too simple. The layers are too easy to spot... D'ya understand? Well... On the flip there's jazz. Marmalade Ovakill is a doctor rockit-esque electro jazz journey through the 20th century ending up in the 21th. Very moody, awesome. Perfectly balanced, nothing feels misplaced on this one really. The Daniel Ibbotson remix of the same is also brilliant. Together with "Career..." my favorite. Last year's "Souped Up" was one of the stongest releases from Clear in a LONG while, and definetaly one of the most kickin slabs of vinyl to ever come from that fine label, this remix is something along the same lines, and maybe even better. A tangent to "I Like It" of the Quant EP, my favorite Dot track thus far. Right up my alley. I dunno what to say really, but I advice you not to wait too long purchasing this fine double 12". I wouldn't want to be without it. Reviews of Hab's "maPOd" and Friend's "Sauna Sessions" with you soon.
