spunk jazz sampler 10" (ILL)
hark the sound of spunk jazz, well what
is it then i hear you mutter?
ok, heres the facts, 2 track sampler for a
forthcoming compilation on a label set up
by main man at biggie uk distribution company
'charged', said compo features many members of
the spymania & bo vinyl crews as well as our
very own kung funk (aka hoarse operator)
and here is the precursor
as black flag's producer spot remarked, "punk
and jazz have a lot in common, recordings are
sometimes undisciplined and lacking in polish,
but often brilliant"
add the urban tangle of drum n bass to this
equation & there yer go - spunk jazz
with their track "spare parts", spymania
upstarts 'paddington breaks' summon up the
spirit of the santana band to commence a
furious bongo-led latino wig out jam with
the sonically twisted and abrasive
prescence of throbbing gristle, driven
frenetic percussion, a tremendously funky
earth- quakin bottom end and distortion
boxes set to kill are the order of the day
here, with random atonal interjections of
feedback and heavy filter abuse sustaining
the tension, it's an incredible rollercoaster
ride that you just don't wanna stop
ironically enough animals on wheels track
"f.v.a." is entirely composed of "drill'n'bass"
[yeuch] spare parts, disposable ones at that,
time stretched tumbling breaks, sickly childlike
melodies and a wafting wah wah guitar sample
are thrown together in some semblance of order,
art for art's sake mate
a problem i have with genre-fied compilations such
as these, are as soon as the big boys try to define
a movement, you suspect that creatively the very
movement that they are trying to encapsulate has
lost it spark, sure legions of imitators attempt
to fill the shoes of the *true* innovators with
inept facsimiles of a blueprint that never existed
in the first place (except within marketing
porfolio's & the pages of the back slap happy music
press), but by the time these compilations hit
the racks those blazed the path will be a step
ahead, as baambatta put it "looking for the perfect
beat"
beat dis!
