(btw the press release came with a biog
of coldcut which details their history,
if anyone is interested i can mail it to
ya)
[first the press release]-
" fuck the dj's let play with toys
the daddies of sonic sex pressed up 30 custom
made platters of souped up beats & peices and
distributed them amongst the most delinquent
sound terrorists, to wreak havoc inter-pretation
in their own styles, the beats and pieces series
continues to explore the turf that lies between
the turntable knights of the analouge age and
the ticktocknology of digital manipulation
cd single contains quicktime video for mac & pc
the coldcut album ' let us play' will be released on
september 8th, featuring collaborations with ex dead
kennedy jello biafra, legendary funk drummer bernard
purdie, rising stars jimpster, activist bongo, poet
salena saliva and one of coldcut's biggest inspiration's
steinski, the album will come complete with a free cd
rom developed by 'hex', it features videos of 8 tracks,
related info, games and iconclastic music creation toys"
[now the review]
back to the old skool folks, to say the
sample masters have pooled some devasting
scratch fiends to reshape their sampledelic
80's classic is an understatment indeed
whole thang kicks off with a deconstructed
mix from black and moore themselves, fluidly
cutting up hip hop / funk soundbites with kentic
scratching, imagine their journeys by dj's cd
compressed into 6 minutes
on the flip side new kid on the block kid koala
creates a piledriving stop/start/flip on it's head
mix of beats, the aural representation of rush
hour new york, a 1000 taxi drivers yelling and
tooting their horns, even led zep's 'when the
levee breaks' makes a brief appearance.
next up john mcentire (tortoise) takes the heat
out of the proceedings with a slow burning dubby
lounge-core take that brings to mind a wistful soft
machine jamming with massive attack
disc 2 steps further into pure sonic hip hop territory,
strictly kid's mix defies logic with it's lightning fast
tempo changes and wild abstract scratching whilst q-bert
strips the track down to it's bare components before
restructuring an oblique experimental hip hop groove
t-power draws the curtain with dramatic oriental charged
drum n bass express complete with street fighter samples
