For even more info on this fairly threaded subject ( copywright)
check the the very well done book concerning the subject of
the Negativland/U2/ Casey Kasem scandal of 1992 (93?)
The book is exhaustively compiled and is a great laugh to boot.
The pros and cons, the lawyers, the artists, the greed, the stupidity,
all that stuff that makes music (even IDM) so fun.
and is there a way that all the Warp bashers out there can now *stop*
praising Warp in *other* posts? It seems funny that *so* many idm'ers
who are complaining about unfair business practices and add 2 cents as
to why the label is deficient are also *often * the same folks who love the
output of the label. shut up.
bash bash bash, love love love. Make up your minds, folks.
I remember when I used to collect Throbbing Gristle. They had a very loose
attitude about bootlegs where they simply requested that if a bootleg were
to be made
of a live show or an interview, that each member of the group get 4 copies.
HOWEVER, they were known to get realy involved when someone were to
counterfeit
a release, so much that an old story cited Genesis ( TG band leader, not
the rock group )
as actually *tracking* down the scum that would make illegitamite copies of
the group's catalog
and kicking some tail.
But that's all hearsay. Point being...as a fan, I remember TG stating not
to buy any copies
of their LPs that were not on their label or "approved" bootleg labels. So
I did'nt. I respected
the fact that artists should get paid for their work and that assholes
should'nt. Please lets not
get on whether TG were assholes....that's another irrelevant (yet
interesting ) story.
Now, I realize that the original thread was about burning copies for free
distribution
is a whole other point is quite different from my TG parallel. However, I
think those people
that have a level head should be able to figure out boundaries of
legal/monetary ethics for themselves.
I admit to a burn copy of something for my own personal use. A friend had
a burner.
This friend had a bunch of OBSCENELY RARE 12"s that I'd never ever see again.
I burned 5 CDs of all of this material. This was for my own personal use
and I can assure
you will never be duplicated, for anyone. No, I won't even tell you what
the material is.
Again, its simply for personal use.
1,000 free copies of Thriller? Its quite easy to find in any Good Will,
Salvation army or
thrift shop from Burbank to Bangor. I'll spend my 1.00 on the vinyl copy.
I wonder what Marylyn Manson would think.....
