I voted for Skam as best label, but Orbital's In Sides as best album of the year?! Orbital?! Argh, I'm trying not to vomit in disgust. I bought the album, listened to it, and passed it off for what it was: MTV breakthrough/quick-burn fodder which we're all quickly getting sick of, hopefully. Christ. Yet another example of the undue and undeserved influence we're letting MTV have on musical tastes. Show some free will, people, for God's sakes.

An opinion is just that: an opinion. With that in mind, I think Skam was consistent in the quality of its releases, so I picked quality over quantity. I'd have picked Rephlex, otherwise. I'd much rather wait (and pay for) for one great record every two-three months, than piss-off records every other week. However, the choice of Orbital as best album just sticks in my craw -- there were so many alternatives to this of infinitely better quality that are *readily* available, if you made the slightest effort, that noone who voted for these sorry bastards has the least excuse. Everyone should bow their heads in utter shame and pray to the IDM gods for absolution in 1997. Who are we going to vote for next time around? Neil Diamond with a beatbox? <LOL> In Sides...MTV Breakthrough? Are you serious? <LOL> I guess it's all a big MTV conspiracy plot that got In Sides voted as best IDM album....... <LOL> ....<as I wipe the tears of laughter from my eyes> :-) That has got to be one of the most hilarious and ridiculous comments that I've ever heard...Orbital won for best album on the IDM list because of MTV's influence? <LOL> :-) Forgive me....I enjoyed that one. :-) Tony

nah, it'll be Orbital again, and without a doubt it will be well deserved too, personally I can't wait for their new album, even though I doubt they've even started on it yet. _________________ ______ ___________ ___ | / \| \| \ | | | |__ __| | | | |_| | | | | | | |\_ _/ | | | | | | | | |___| \______/|______/|______/ |___|

Did you stop to think that you're in the minority? Most people thought In Sides was a great recording. MTV breakthrough...hmm what the hell does that mean? I've seen the Box video a couple times and that's it. I listened to Orbital for years before I saw a video. Is FSOL's Dead Cities MTV crap too? What about Autechre, Sun Electric, Skylab? They've all been played on MTV recently.

Yeah, uh, OK. Am I the only person here who resents being told that my tastes are being shaped by a channel I hardly ever watch (except Amp, which I tape), and that I'm not free-willed enough to make up my own mind that Orbital's _In_Sides_ was among my favorite albums last year? I bought close to 400 CDs last year, and likely 250 of them were albums. Of those, I'd say about 150 of them were either in the IDM or Ambient realm. I didn't nominate anyone, but I did vote in the final round. In the albums-of-the-year category, there was only one entry that I do not own, the not-released-in-the-US-yet _Richard_D_James_. Of those, Orbital's most recent CD was my favorite. So I chose it. Was it the most "innovative?" Maybe not; _Emit_Ecaps_ meshed a lot of things together into a pretty fine whole, making new things click that hadn't clicked before. Was it the most "experimental?" Probably not; _Feed_Me_Weird_Things_ jerked you from here to tomorrow with its dizzying attempts at rhythm- and structure-breakdown. Was is the "hardest?" No, I'd have to award that one to _Dead_Cities_, the most relentlessly hollow and pissed-off of the bunch. But was it the release that, in my mind, best represents what "intelligent dance music" is all about? You betcha. It has its share unusual rhythms and noises, pings and whizzes that come from no earthly place, whirling build-ups and breakdowns, and melodies from Mars, yet it is also funky in all the right places (not to mention some of the wrong ones) and compels you to put your feet to the floor. And on top of all that, it has a soul, a disconnected, confused, cynical, cautiously-optimistic soul, a soul with a presence that sucks you in and never lets go. You can feel it trapped in your stereo for the duration of the disc, yearning to be freed. To me, Orbital have made among the finest albums of the decade, not just this year. I cast my ballot in on this one unabashedly.

You can accuse me repeatedly of being an Orbital fan and I'll wear that shirt with no apologies. But don't accuse me of not thinking about it or not "making the slightest effort." I bought plenty of music this year, and in this "genre," _In_Sides_ was my vote for the best and the brightest. -- Adam J Weitzman "Getting [your computer] to work is no more Individual, Inc. difficult than building a nuclear reactor weitzman@individual.com from wristwatch parts using only your teeth." http://www.individual.com - Dave Barry

Yet another example of the undue and undeserved influence we're letting MTV have on musical tastes. Show some free will, people, for God's sakes. Making an effort?!!! MTV?! I, and no doubt there are many like me, am regularly in the stores listening to the new releases, hoping to come accross some really wild, really good music. I listen to names both familiar and unfamiliar and the stores where I shop stock most of the items discussed on this list. My pursuit of the good groove is an active one. My selection of Orbital as #1 was not by default and not the result an apathetic "Oh well, they're the only band in the poll I've heard of." (Oops, dangling participle.) I don't get MTV or its Canadian equivalent MuchMusic and even if I did...well you don't see Alanis Morisette in my collection and everyone seen one of her damn videos. (Actually, maybe I like Orbital because I've seen an Alanis video, they're all part of the same megacorporate conspiracy, after all.) It is just a poll and the results will always be affected by an album's popularity as well as its quality. In theory, a mediocre album can win if it's the only album a big enough majority has heard. But in the case of In Sides, and this is no slight to the other artists nominated, we have the combination of quantity AND quality. all for now, magic hands

Won't argue with any of the Poll results, but I would like to cast my vote for a return to the old polling format. I sort of miss having the top 20 or so albums listed in the results rather than a ranking of nominees (and boy, did some rank...j/k :-). Without the list, there's little chance to identify those gems I may have missed during the year. Also, for someone like myself, who had very few selections show up as nominees, the 2nd phase was pretty unexciting.
