He's not a whale, but his great grandfather actually wrote "Moby Dick". :-) Moby makes music of many different styles -- ambient, house, hi-energy disco, acid, speed metal (!) -- but not real IDM. In fact he has a contempt for the IDM scene. He thinks it is too boring and esoteric, he wants the music to be simple, kicking and make you flip out. He has toured with some IDM artists (Aphex twin, Orbital, the Shamen) and most artists hate him because he has so energetic live performances, instead of standing behind a mixer board with a "Generation X" attitude like most techno artists do. Currently techno doesn't inspire him anymore so his next album will unfortunately be a rock album. But under the pseudonym Voodoo child, he will hopefully continue to release underground techno music. OK, Moby is not IDM, but I like him anyway. I would strongly recommend these releases: Moby: Early underground. Album. Compilation with tracks from his earliest house and techno 12"s on Instinct. Moby: Ambient. Album. Minimalistic ambient, rhythmic but sometimes beatless. Moby: Move. EP. The best techno EP ever made. Try to find the Elektra CD. Voodoo child: Demons/Horses. EP. Two 20-minute long repetitive acid tracks. Voodoo child: Higher. EP. Two repetitive acid tracks and an "ambient acid" bonus CD track. There are several WWW sites with Moby information. Dan Cerman maintains the "ultimate Moby page". I don't remember the URL but his e-mail address is hymn@phantom.com if you're interested. ********************* * Johan Jaatinen * * aniag@info.liu.se * *********************

nope... All he's done is a bunch of crappy rave 'toons that wern't very good even at the time. I give him some credit for his ambient album, but that's about it. His later day antics completely turned me off from ever buying any of his new stuff. 2 new years eves ago, I saw him 'perform'. He just beat on a drumcat, playing some samples along with a dat. Then at the end, he took off all his cloths, stood on a keyboard and had spotlights illuminating him. Can you say cheezy? yep... word to the mothership, brock np: Wagon Christ - 'throbbing pouch'

Moby is definately not you average raver. In fact I think to categorize him as such would be a grave injustice. I was able to pick up his most recent CD, Animal Rights, which happened to include a bonus disc called Little Idiot as an import. Animal Rights contains mostly guitar driven electronic rock. Little Idiot can be best categorized as classical style ambient--this one is good, it knocks my ass right out to sleep. Moby seems to be an individual driven by his own set of ideals and does not follow any formula to success--he is going to do what he wants to, but at the same time do a damn good job of doing it. If you have the chance, give both discs a listen. I think the time spent will be well worth your while.

To me Moby's a pretentious twat - anyone who acts like they're crucified when up on stage is a cheeseball. Orbital, on the other hand, keep making fresh music but don't try and shove a social agenda in your face. GD

Regarding Moby. Don't believe what people say about him. They have only heard his commercial hits like "Feeling So Real", tracks that I can understand are a bit too dumb for an IDM-head. But if you really get to know Moby's music, it's excellent. On the Moby mailing list, most people like Aphex Twin so you'll probably like it too. Moby has made music in so many different styles that there will probably be something for everyone, and on the other hand you won't like everything by him. My recommendations are: "Early Underground" -- Definitely the best techno album ever made (IMHO) "Ambient" -- Amateurish but brilliant (IMHO) "Demons / Horses" (as Voodoo Child) -- Two 20-minute psychedelic acid tracks "The End of Everything" (as VC) -- Super-emotional anti-intelligent ambient "Move" -- Best techno EP ever (IMHO)
