+------ The longest stereo CD I have clocks in at about 79' 50". It is a compilation of Percy Grainger's music for Piano on the Chandos label. I read somewhere that the closer a recording company gets to 80 minutes the more rejects they have in the manufacture of that particular CD. I have a lot of CDs that are around 78 minutes, so it must be a problem with those last 2 minutes. Everyone probably knows this but apparently the reason a CD is this particular length, is that Phillips asked Herbert Von Karajan about this new medium's length and he said it would be "wunderbar" to have Beethoven's Choral Symphony on one disk! Nope, and it wasn't the wife of Sony's chairman either: Of more interest is an interview by Nancy Herther in the July 1992 _CD-ROM Professional_ ("The Past, Present and Future of the Compact Disc, Multimedia and the Industry: An Interview with Dr. Toshi Doi"). Dr. Doi is a Director of the Sony Corporation, and helped invent the compact disc. On p. 21: Q. I've heard different stories about the beginnings of the compact disc. Could you please tell us how the compact disc came to be the 12 cm disc that it is. A. Mr. Oga from Sony decided the size of the compact disc. We had a big debate with Philips on the size of the CD disc. I was pushing 10 cm, because it was a round number and a very small disc. Sony was very interested in having a portable CD player from the very beginning. Philips was pushing for a much larger disc***. Mr. Oga finally made the decision that he wanted something which could hold the entire Beethoven's 9th Symphony on a single disc. That was a very good decision and as good of a reason as any other. Apparently a lot of recent CD players can easily handle 80 minute CDs due to improved tracking on the laser pickup. Older CD players are a bit sloppier and can't handle the tighter spacings on longer CDs and start to skip and drop out. Just what I'd heard.... _____________________________________________________ Jezz @ http://homepages.enterprise.net/jezz/ Roland D-110 Yamaha YS-100 Casio CZ-101 Boss SE-50 C-Labs AWE-32 Tascam 4 Track Tascam 8ch Mixer _____________________________________________________

well, I don't really think it's going to matter all that much in a year or so when the dvd's(digital video disk, same size as a cd!) come out... I mean, what was it, 8 hours of cd quality audio or 4 hours of digital video??? Screw making mix tapes, I'm off to figure out the Media100...hmmmm, ambient/idm mixed audio/video collage...this is going to be fun! q out By pressing down the special key it plays a little melody... --- some stuff I'm working on for Syntext Communications www.amproductions.com/ www.amproductions.com/Syntext2.html www.amproductions.com/N-Rage.html ---

but does it compress the information? will people _buy_ it? personally, i hope not, i'm sick of the format-change-of-the-year games. [grievous]

Current CD data capacity: 650 megs Max possible DVD capacity[1]: 17 gigs 17000/650 = 26.15; 26.15 * 74 minutes = 1935 minutes, or just short of 32 hours. If you want to go crazy, today you can do MPEG-2 audio compression at 10:1 with pretty much zero loss of quality (or at least not discernable from noise) if you're using a good encoder - 320 hours of music, anyone? That's 16 hours short of two weeks. :) The catch is that the current DVD specs don't appear to have an "audio-only" format which would facilitate such massive sound storage (this just from reading up on it for 10 minutes) but since it'll also have a data format (just like CD-ROM's) the potential is there to do whatever ya want.
