I picked up the new Small Fish With Spine ep, "Fugu", over the weekend. I really like it. It's red vinyl, if yr into that sorta thing, and sounds great. The first track is nominally d'n'b, but really only uses that as an influence ending up with more of a downtempo feel. Mellow sections intercede and the track flows nicely and is very funky. Track two contains a neat sample[?] of a female voice [is this Riz Maslen herself?] singing "He who builds a world" -- very cryptic, very vague, very cool. The second side has a slow [tr]hip-hop track and another creeper. Cool rhythms on all four songs and dense sounds throughout. *** 1/2 [whatever that means to you...] Also found The Return of Drexciya 12". Unfortunately my sub-par record player chooses not to be able to play some of one of the tracks, skipping incessantly. Does this sometimes happen to other people with brand new vinyl?? I'm perfectly willing to admit that my turntable is crap, but I was hoping maybe not cos it plays most records just fine. Brian David Antonak = abandon Kid Variant

Underground Resistance (the label, not the artists) like to cut their records louder than most labels. Sometimes, though, something will go screwy between the mastering and pressing and the resulting vinyl will be prone to skipping (this happened with the _Electronic Warfare 2X12", for example) -d.w. on now: Matt MacQueen's copy of Negative X (finally!)
