in my net i found: i-f _Portrait of a Dead Girl: The Cause_ (Disko B) A: I do because I couldn't care less.../ Superman (live at "der bruine planet") B: Nothing else / Little Japanese feet a little worried i was at the purchase of a slab of acidplanet wax; a few of my previous encounters (beverly hills 808303 on DBN and i-f on mururoa) revealed that though i like the grungy production of these records, they can be a bit too tracky. this record is different. i was also nervous that the day after i ordered it, it was revealed that someone's two favorite tracks have been left off this issue. even without them, though, this is a pretty nifty release, if not totally mesmerizing. that production is definitely in effect (stay away, jon drukman) and the sounds are way beyond the elementary boxwork on, say, the mururoa cut. one slammin electrofunker ("I do because...") and the rest have this way of starting out plodding but growing strange, shifting rhythms like the marching snare sounds in "nothing else". anybody wanna sell me their original viewlexx pressing? SRI _Grand Slam_ (New Transatlantic) A: grand slam / seven seconds B: five inch / echo pain a twelver from mike ink's brother (?) sweet reinhard. it's my first encounter with this corner of the techno world (Studio 1/Profan/etc.) and it's well done but not stunning. The cuts are minimal, with a bass or drum line anchoring it down, and an arsenal of clicks, buzzes and chord stabs wandering in over the top. none are pounding 4x4, and "grand slam" veers towards aux88 territory, but it needs serious pitching up. "five inch" has a grooovy house bassline and finally "echo pain" has a few of the gnarly acid growls i heard on a previous sri release in the store, which sadly are not in evidence here. nick ps. i love you, 4th world ;)
