Maybe I asked this before. (Excuse my goofy tone but I am under the influence of some really harsh antihistamine right now.) What is the source for the mix of Cowgirl that keeps popping up in the movie Hackers? Also, could someone please define drum 'n' bass for me. have not been reading this list much lately and it just sort of materialized on the ambient list, so I feel kinda stupid about that, you know... I just got LFO's Frequencies after all this time, and I love it and would like to know where I should go next. That's about it. Sorry to bug. Please send anything completely useles via private mail so no one else has to read it! Thanks. :) einexile, enemy of the people

Frequencies is about the most definitive musical statement I can think of offhand. The bleep style just about died right when it was released, for obvious reasons (it's like a friend of mine used to say, if you can't do better than Tolstoi, why bother writing a novel?). Other records worth checking out in a similar style, though, include Sweet Exorcist's 'CCCD' (now out on midprice on Warp, after I spent years looking for it), Cabaret Voltaire's 'Colours,' the first Nightmares on Wax album, and (of course) Warp's first compilation, 'The Pioneers of the Hypnotic Groove.' The only real definition I can think of is a simple hyperspeed cut-up of timbres and drums, harmonizing with wobbly bass. Lots of tweaking and noise filter in and out making it an enjoyable foot stomper. I've found the best atmosphere for good jungle (RE: Squarepusher, Link, Goldie...none of that over-hyped bedroom ragga bullshit) is riding the subway while listening through headphones. I can't really dance to it, but it sounds so good in a good hifi system. Jungle is supposedly the future of music...I can't argue, as I'm thoroughly impressed with a lot of newer material that artists have put thought into, rather than simply cut'n paste.

Orbital "1" (the green album on FFRR) Speedy J "Ginger" (warp) Synectics in The Purple Universe (rephlex) Those are three just off the top of my head. ____ __,--- --.__ ,- ; . Actually, it's Goldie et al that are over-hyped. So far, I much prefer the ragga "bullshit" to the aforementioned primadonnas. Make way for the .sig!!!
