I recently got back from a trip to LA, went to a # of stores (mostly in Hollywood, W. Hollywood & Studio City) recommended over the net & was very disappointed. Are there no stores in LA that sell electronic & UK imports? Aaron's had very little & their new import cd's were very expensive. They did have some new vinyl, but mostly older releases. The 2 remotely interesting used cd's i found at Aaron's were severely scratched. The dj & used stores on Melrose were a complete waste of time, & Tower & Virgin paled by comparison to those in the SF bay area..... Where do people in LA find anything?

As I'm sure one Mr. Parry will attest, LA record shopping is hit-and-miss, but depending on what you like, there are some cool places. aron's -- you need to get there on shipping days (wed/thurs) before everyone has picked through it and there's nothing left. hunting in the bargain bins there can yield pure gold. mr. parry (hereafter referred to as "the bastard" :) found a mint vinyl copy of coldcut's first album for 99 cents. (arghhhh!!!) record surplus on pico and barrington is where i lived out my early '80s fantasies for free (good payback on trading in crap cds) -- lots of cool old vinyl for 99 cents or 1.85 for classic double albums... house music -- go to prime cuts and dmc and you're fine. anything else ... i think something that's key for los angeles-area enthusiasts of idm is to ask for stuff at almost any of the stores... special ordering is frequent and common...hey, befriend a buyer and you'll be all set. i realize this doesn't work for out-of-town visitors to our beautifully violent cit, but hey -- either call ahead and special order :) or just come to seek out some old forgotten gems. what would now be on if my roommate wasn't asleep: jean michel jarre's "oxygene" (see what i mean?) ____ Hug Your Waistline to the Bassline Tamara Palmer trance@netcom.com http://www.interverse.com/~tamara/righting.html Women Respond to Bass

not all that hard to do, i picked up the vinyl here in Santa Cruz for $2 or $3 (and subsequently traded in my CD copy) - more so for the artwork than for being a vinyl junky (I'm a big fan of Mark Beyer's work, who hails from my hometown....)

are these the dj stores on melrose? They were AWFUL: nothing new, poor selection & overpriced...... .....though I did find the Eternity Project One album w/ the Orb (on Wau Mr. Modo), albeit fairly trashed, for $1.99 (but everything else in the used/old bin was junk). Chris KUSP

I just got back yesterday from a week in LA. Aided by Lazlo's Guide to LA Record Shopping and Tamara Palmer, I found my way to just about all of the major shops. My personal findings: Arons was the place to go for new music. I bought plenty of new vinyl there including a couple of LP's on Rather Interesting, the Funkjazztical Tricknology comp on Ninja Tune and an EP on Skam (though my prize find was Coldcut's "Whats That Noise?" in one of the used bins for 99cents). The other place I thought was definately worth a visit was Record Surplus in West LA - tons and tons of used vinyl all priced at 97c. Interesting finds there included the Switched-On Bach record and Wildplanet's Electron EP on Warp. The specialty shops (Beat Non Stop, Streetsound, etc) were all very dissapointing. :: Alan M. (sorry Tam). As for record shopping in L.A., be willing to spend a full day hitting every store you can find, living in the used bins. I find more material in the used bins than in the new bins. Aron's is quite cool, but don't shop there, for I am greedy, and I want all the cool records to myself. ;) -- ____________________________________________________________________________ Daniel "The BRAT" Barassi bratmix@netcom.com BRAT Productions http://commline.com/~bratmix/ "New for 1996 - The Flame Proof (tm) BRAT"

With all this talk about shopping for records/CD's in Los Angeles, I am surprised that no one has mentioned Dr. Freeclouds Mixing Lab, owned and operated by Ron D Core and Simply Jeff. It is in Costa Mesa (Orange County), and is probably at least 45min from the Melrose Area, but worth the drive. I have found that this store generally compares well with the places I have been in the SF area (Soundworks, the Telegraph stores) and even with places I went in London. The staff is really friendly and organized, and there are listening stations for CD's and records. Very big selection of both, although I generally go for the records. The prices aren't the best you'll find, but they are definitely reasonable. Consider a visit to their well-designed web sight. http://www.drfreeclouds.com/home.html Jeff P.S. What they have typed in to their web page is not indicative of the stockpile they have at the store. -- Jeff Andrews Globalstar Software Engineer jandrews@qualcomm.com 619.658.4756
