hey all, Sorry to bother..but if anyone has time, I'd appreciate some help: I'm thinking that I want to start making music on my computer, and I thought you all would be the best to ask about how to get started. I have a 486, and a pretty good stereo(components) I've heard about several programs,"studio" "band in a box" "encore" "music time" "master trax pro" etc.. I guess you could say I'm fairy serious about this, I don't want to go o out and buy stuff and then regret it later when I don't have enough options.. On the other hand, I'm doing this mostly for myself.. I don't have a DAT or intend to buy one...at least not for several years... I need a keyboard yes? With general midi? I'd appreciciate it if anyone who is knowledgeable about this stuff could e-mail me, and let me know how(and what you use) to make idm. I'm not directing this post to professionals...I just want to getet started, and to know how/the best way.. thank you everyone andi

Hi Andi,
quoted 1 line I'm thinking that I want to start making music on my computer,> I'm thinking that I want to start making music on my computer,
you are thinking? How about "I want to start making..." :-)
quoted 1 line I have a 486, and a pretty good stereo(components)> I have a 486, and a pretty good stereo(components)
what about your memory and hard-drives? You'll need a lot of both! (and fast ones!)
quoted 2 lines I've heard about several programs,"studio" "band in a box"> I've heard about several programs,"studio" "band in a box" > "encore" "music time" "master trax pro" etc..
sorry... I know nothing about PC software... just Logic Notator or Cubase.
quoted 1 line I guess you could say I'm fairy serious about this,> I guess you could say I'm fairy serious about this,
Could?! :-) Are you or arn't you?
quoted 2 lines I don't want to go o out and buy stuff and then regret it later when I> I don't want to go o out and buy stuff and then regret it later when I > don't have enough options..
you will NEVER have enough options! Question is how much you need to get started.
quoted 1 line On the other hand, I'm doing this mostly for myself..> On the other hand, I'm doing this mostly for myself..
Do you know anything about music? Can you play an instrument? Work with notes?
quoted 2 lines I don't have a DAT or intend to buy one...> I don't have a DAT or intend to buy one... > at least not for several years...
I thought you are serious about it? How do you want to record your work? Forget about audio tapes! Sooner or later you'll need a DAT and if you are into harddisc recording, sampling etc.... the DAT is an important tool to store data (like sounds but also normal programs).
quoted 1 line I need a keyboard yes? With general midi?> I need a keyboard yes? With general midi?
Depends on how you want to work. Of course you can only work with samples in the computer (like a tracker). Sooner or later you will work with midi-equipment. General midi is unimportant.
